UCAR

The purpose of the UCP External Advisory Committee (EAC) is to better enable UCP to anticipate the evolving scientific landscape and community needs for Earth system sciences. The UCP EAC provides guidance, advice, direction, and regular feedback on UCP's activities and management of its centers and programs, consistent with UCP's vision, goals, and objectives.

The UCP EAC is composed of leading scientists with a broad view and deep understanding of the field of Earth system sciences, where it is going, and how UCP Programs and Centers may contribute to the advances of Earth system science, in close collaboration with the community.

Ana P. Barros

Ana P. Barros is the Donald Biggar Willett Chair of Engineering and Head and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering in The Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her primary research interests are in Hydrology, Hydrometeorology, and Environmental Physics with a focus on water-cycle processes in the coupled land-atmosphere-biosphere system particularly in regions of complex terrain, remote sensing of the environment, climate predictability, extreme events, and risk assessment of natural hazards.

Mona Behl, EAC Vice Chair

University of Georgia

Mona Behl is the associate director of University of Georgia's Sea Grant college program where she also holds public service and academic appointments. Her research interests include building the adaptive capacity of local communities to manage the impacts of weather and climate, preparing people for the future work, and broadening participation in geosciences.

Bradley R. Colman

American Meteorological Society President, Retired

Bradley R. "Brad" Colman is the president-elect of American Meteorological Society (AMS). In this role, he provides leadership to 13,000 members. In his previous role, as director of Weather Strategy for Bayer/The Climate Corporation, he set Enterprise weather priorities, and worked to provide tailored decision-support information to Bayer's global agricultural industry. Before working for Climate, he was principal program manager on a Microsoft team charged to develop a sole-source weather service for their ecosystem. He has authored or coauthored more than 30 journal articles and a NRC report, contributed content to 4 books, and coedited award winning volumes.

Belay Demoz is a Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and is the current Director of the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET). He is also the current Principal Investigator and Executive Director for the Goddard Earth Sciences technology and Research II (https://gestar2.umbc.edu/). His research interests include mesoscale observation and instrumentation in atmospheric physics and climate as well as atmospheric science influence in climate policy.

Advisor and Consultant to Weather and Remote Sensing Organizations

William B. Gail is an advisor and consultant to weather and remote sensing organizations. He was previously co-founder an dCEO at Global Weather Corporation, an industry-leading provider of weather forecast services to the media, energy, and transportation industries, and product lead for weather and climate at Google. Gail is a past President and Fellow of the American Meteorological Society. He serves or has served on a variety of other editorial, corporate, and organizational boards, including the US Commerce Data Advisory Council and NOAA Environmental Information Services Working Group (EISWG), and has testified in Congress on multiple occasions regarding weather issues.

Sanjay Khanna is Chief Futurist of SK Futures Inc., a strategic foresight consultancy dedicated to enhancing the resiliency of individuals, organizations, and communities. Khanna is also an Adjunct Professor at McMaster University, where he lectures in, and is an advisory board member of, the Master of Public Policy in Digital Society Program. He is on the Program Faculty of the Law of Emergencies Certificate Program at Osgoode Professional Development, York University. He is currently Visiting Lecturer at the Royal College of Art (RCA) and Project Partner of its new Liveable Planet Challenge Lab.

Tristan L'Ecuyer is a professor of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) and director of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison). His research leverages state-of-the-art satellite observations to address the pressing questions in climate science. L'Ecuyer's research group is pioneering new methods for measuring rain and snow from space, determining the role clouds and pollution play in shaping the Earth's climate, helping to realize the full potential of solar energy, and documenting the causes of rapid Arctic climate change.

Her research interests include convective mass transport, gravity waves, and numeric modeling.

Martin Ralph

Martin Ralph is a synoptic and mesoscale Research Meteorologist. Since 2013, he has been at the University of California San Diego/Scripps Institution of Oceanography where he is developing the "Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes." Ralph is focused on understanding the physical processes that create extremes in precipitation ranging from flood to drought, and on advancing associated observations, predictions, climate projections, and decision support tools. A primary topic has been atmospheric rivers and their role in mid latitude precipitation.
