Enable live captions in a Google Chrome browser
Google Chrome will auto-detect audio and speech and provide on-screen closed captioning. Closed captioning provided by Google Chrome can be resized, the color can be changed, and more.
To access the setting, open Google Chrome. Click the three-dot menu in the upper right. Choose Settings > Advanced > Accessibility.
How to turn captions on in Google Meet
The Google Meet conferencing platform has closed captioning built in.
Choose the CC / Turn on Captions icon while in a meeting. You may also click the three-dot menu while in a meeting and turn on captions.
How to turn captions on in Zoom
Zoom provides the following instructions to enable the closed captioning for individual use:
- Sign in to the Zoom web portal.
- Click the CC Live Transcript button.
- Enable Auto-Transcription. Note: if the option is grayed out, it has been locked at either the group or account level. You need to contact your Zoom admin.
- (Optional) Clicking the arrow near the CC Live Transcript button will give users the option to view the full transcript on the side panel in-meeting or change subtitle settings (changing font size, etc.)
Live transcription is currently not supported in breakout rooms.
How to get a transcript from a YouTube video
See and copy transcripts from any CC enabled video by following these easy steps:
- Click the 3 dots below the video.
- Clicking on Open Transcript creates a new window in which users can view the transcript.
- This transcript can be copied and pasted into a text document file.
