What is U-INNOVATE?  U-INNOVATE is UCAR's internal competition for new technology and innovations such as software, hardware and applications.  This fun, friendly and fast-paced competition is open to all UCAR employees with the goal of promoting and fostering new ideas and progressing these ideas from research to potential commercial applications.  Entries are judged by members of the UCAR Exchange Board of Directors and experienced local entrepreneurs.  In addition to cash prizes, the winners are provided other resources to help commercialize their ideas.

U-INNOVATE 2020 will take place on Friday, May 1 from 2 - 5pm in the large auditorium at Foothills Lab 2 (3450 Mitchell Lane in Boulder).  A casual reception will follow.  Everyone is invited to attend!

Key dates to keep in mind prior to U-INNOVATE 2020:

  • Friday, February 28; 1 - 2:30pm in FL2-1001: Workshop on how to create a successful U-Innovate Pitch.  Please see Staff Notes for additional information.
  • Wednesday, April 8 at 5pm: Deadline for participants to submit entries.  If you are a UCAR employee and would like to participate, please be sure to read these guidelines.

The inaugural U-INNOVATE competition was held on April 26, 2019 and was a great success.  Eight participants competed and the winners were:

1st place: Jonathan Vigh and Caspar Ammann (RAL) for a Climate Risk Portal.

2nd place: Nihanth Cherukuru (CISL) for "What's Around" - Augmented Reality (AR) application to make indoor space accessible for people who are blind/visually impaired.

3rd place: Daniel Ziskin (ACOM) for "Breathe" - an app that predicts air quality where you live.
