Hurricane Katrina Challenge:
Staffers contribute to help hurricane victims

UCAR President Rick Anthes announced on September 5 that he was challenging all UCAR staffers to contribute to the American Red Cross in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

"The extraordinary tragedy in Mississippi and Louisiana associated with Hurricane Katrina calls for extraordinary action," Rick wrote. He pointed out that the Red Cross was one of the earliest organizations on the scene to provide relief.

As part of the Hurricane Katrina Challenge, Rick said that UCAR would match all employee contributions with money from the UCAR General Fund, up to a maximum of $50,000. He initially pledged a maximum of $25,000, but doubled the amount three days later when 188 staffers and visitors had already contributed more than $30,000 toward the challenge. On September 14, the $50,000 challenge was officially met, for a total donation of $100,000 to the Red Cross.

The Employee Activity Committee also sponsored a supplies collection from September 8 to 14. Staffers donated personal items for hurricane victims, including clothes, toiletries, towels, bedding, toys, diapers, and more.
