    Friday, May 18th FL2 - Room 1001
    Coffee and Donuts - 8:30
    Presentation - 9 - 10am

Steve Sain - section lead from the Geophysical Statistics Project
(GSP) - will be giving an informal talk highlighting some of the
activites of GSP and Image. This talk is one in a series of talks
planned by the ECSA intended to help early career scientist become
aware of activities in other departments and divisions. These talks
are intended to be accessible and interesting to people outside of
    field being discussed.

Abstract: Statistics for Numerical Models (2006-07 IMAGe
    Theme-of-the-Year)

Numerical models are vital to simulate geophysical, chemical and
ecological processes and to understand the relationship among
components in the Earth system. As models have become larger and more
complex, their construction, validation and analysis are no longer
amenable to simple approaches and statistical summaries. Statistical
science in the past 20 years has advanced to handle the interpretation
of complicated multivariate, spatial and temporal data sets and it is
well suited to tackle the complex outputs from numerical experiments
that are now the norm in the geosciences. In this talk, I will present
an overview of the Geophysical Statistics Project and its role in the
2006-07 Institute for Mathematics Applied to Geosciences 2006-07
Theme-of-the-Year which is focusing on the interface of statistical
science and research in numerical models. Specific examples focusing
on regional climate and space weather will be discussed.
