The Aerosol Laboratory of the Waterloo Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (WCAS) has a new position at the Post Doctoral Level in experimental studies of model cryogenic aerosols. The WCAS Aerosol Laboratory is a collaborative group that carries out research into the physical and chemical properties of atmospheric aerosols. This position will be in the area of cryogenic aerosol studies, with a focus on the optical and chemical properties of low temperature crystalline solid aerosols and supercooled liquid droplets. The overall goal of the program is to determine the effects on atmospheric radiative transfer of common clouds and aerosols and to quantify how these change with temperature. Previous work in this group has included nucleation studies of supercooled water aerosols and models of Arctic haze and Polar Stratospheric Cloud particles. This project operates in collaboration with the WCAS satellite data retrieval group to develop inversion methods for satellite remote sensing measurements. Candidates with experience in IR spectroscopy of the condensed phase will be given preference.
The Aerosol Laboratory group currently consists of approximately 13 personnel at the graduate student and post doctoral levels as well as a mechanical technician and computer systems manager. Further information on the technical aspects of the work may be obtained from Professor J.J. Sloan, WCAS Research Director (http://www.science.uwaterloo.ca/~sloanj).
The WCAS is located at the University of Waterloo (http://www.uwaterloo.ca/) in the Kitchener-Waterloo urban area (http://win.uwaterloo.ca/win/), which has a population of approximately 250,000, and is surrounded by a pleasant, mostly agricultural, rural region. See our local weather forecast at http://www.forecast.uwaterloo.ca for current K-W meteorology.
