The Roberts Forum is established as a tribute to Walter Orr Roberts (1915-1990), a scientific pioneer and statesman whose influence on the fields of atmospheric and environmental sciences will be felt for decades to come.

Dr. Roberts presided over the founding of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) as its first director and was the first president of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). Among many tributes to his considerable achievements was the United Nations Environment Programme's North America Leadership Award. Dr. Roberts was the first scientist to be so honored. The citation reads in part that it is given in honor of his "placing so generously his wisdom and talents in the service of the Earth".

As the Roberts Forum develops, the topics it addresses will broaden to reflect the tremendous breadth of Dr. Roberts' interests and work. Following his example of service to benefit society, the Forum offers to people everywhere information about scientific policy and the societal applications of scientific research.
