Latin American Data Workshop
In collaboration with the University of São Paulo and the Brazilian Meteorological Society, UOP's Unidata Program Center is conducting a Latin American Data Workshop to be held 21-23 August on the campus of the University of São Paulo. The workshop is designed to promote scientific collaborations among the U.S. education and research communities and their counterparts in Latin America.
The three-day workshop will be a combination of plenary, breakout, and hands-on/demonstration sessions. Topics will include:
- use of scientific datasets of interest to the Latin American community
- availability of a wide variety of data through the Internet Data Distribution (IDD) and IDD-Brasil data-sharing networks
- serving and accessing data remotely through Unidata's THREDDS (Thematic Realtime Environmental Distributed Data Services) Data Server and the McIDAS Abstract Data Distribution Environment (ADDE)
- strategies for sharing locally held datasets of general interest
The workshop is free, but space is limited. To register, please see the URL below.

New from COMET: Microwave remote sensing
Below are details of a new online publication available from UOP/COMET. Please see the accompanying Web link for more details.
Microwave Remote Sensing: Land and Ocean Applications
This module introduces the concepts and principles basic to retrieving important land and ocean surface properties using microwave observations from polar-orbiting satellites. The module reviews both past and current satellite missions and also discusses the future National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) constellation. NPOESS is expected to include a passive microwave sensing capability beginning with its second satellite.
