Community meeting on the future of U.S. weather prediction
The American Meteorological Society, in partnership with the Weather Coalition, is hosting a meeting in Boulder on 26-28 July to discuss the future of the U.S. weather prediction enterprise. All interested parties are invited. The meeting will examine

  • strengths and weaknesses of the U.S. weather prediction and research enterprise,
  • the process by which research results and modeling improvements become operational,
  • the nature of the weather prediction community, and
  • the need for a more cooperative and coordinated approach to weather forecasting and research.

Free registration is available on the Web site below.

GTP workshop on coherent structures
The NCAR Geophysical Turbulence Program's Workshop on Coherent Structures in Atmosphere and Ocean takes place in Boulder on 11-14 July. The workshop will survey the functions and features of coherent structures (which are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and ocean) by exchanging ideas from theory, experiments/observations, and computation. Topics of discussion include

  • vortices and waves in rotating stratified flows (dynamics and stability),
  • cascade processes in geophysical turbulence, and
  • stirring, mixing, and transport in geophysical flows.

Registration remains open, with a $25 fee to cover refreshments.

Let us help publicize your opportunities
If your institution seeks applicants for a job opening or attendees for a workshop, UCAR can help you get the word out. Our "Opportunities Outside UCAR" Web page serves as a clearinghouse for opportunities in the atmospheric sciences research community, both nationally and internationally. Please let us know if you have an item we can post for you.   You can also send opportunities to our OppsList e-mail service.
