Seeking undergraduates for NCAR summer workshop
During the week of 16-20 June, NCAR will host the seventh annual Undergraduate Leadership Workshop. The purpose is to inform students about exciting research and career opportunities in the atmospheric and related sciences. The five-day program allows for informal dialogue between students and research scientists as the students explore laboratories, instrumentation, and computing facilities. The agenda also includes speakers and discussion on leadership in the context of atmospheric and related sciences.

Each student's application must be accompanied by a nomination from a faculty member. Both forms can be downloaded from the site below, which includes additional details on the workshop.

Application deadline: 29 February

Does your department carry out interdisciplinary research?
In order to help link interested scientists and advance crosscutting science, NCAR's Societal-Environmental Research Laboratory is compiling a database of interdisciplinary Earth science projects carried out within UCAR member institutions. In some instances, this work is accomplished through a dedicated center. In other cases, it is carried out by one or more individual scientists.

If you or your colleagues are involved with interdisciplinary work that incorporates the atmospheric and related sciences, please drop us a line so we can add you to our database.

NCAR/EOL summer internship for engineering undergraduates
The NCAR Earth Observing Laboratory's summer undergraduate engineering internship program provides a unique and valuable experience to prepare engineering students for successful careers.

Interns are encouraged to develop their own engineering solutions as they work with, and are mentored by, professional and experienced engineers and technicians. During their summer at NCAR, interns have access to a large number of resources, such as sophisticated testing and calibration instruments, technical documentation, and state-of-the-art fabrication capabilities.

EOL's mission primarily calls for applicants with skills in electrical, mechanical, aerospace, optical, and computer engineering, but we encourage all engineering students to apply. EOL provides an hourly wage as well as travel support and housing while in Boulder and expenses while in the field. More details and an online application form can be found at the URL below.

Application deadline: 1 February

NCAR Faculty Fellowship Program now accepting applications
The NCAR Advanced Study Program is pleased to announce that its Faculty Fellowship Program (FFP) is now accepting applications for visits to occur between 1 June 2008 and 31 May 2010. The FFP is designed to foster fruitful and lasting intellectual collaborations between university faculty and the NCAR staff. It provides opportunities and resources for faculty employed at universities to work in residence at NCAR and enables NCAR scientific staff to spend a period of time in residence at U.S. universities.

Application deadline: 14 March
Contacts: Scott Briggs, 303-497-1607, and Paula Fisher, 303-497-1607, both with NCAR/SERE/ASP

Postcards from the Field: Share your project with students, teachers, and the public
The UCAR-based Windows to the Universe project has developed an online system--Postcards from the Field--that allows scientists with Internet access in the field to share informal reports about their experiences and progress with students, teachers, and the public. The growing Postcards site now includes entries from scientists on research expeditions in Mexico, Germany, Antarctica, and the eastern Pacific Ocean.

If you have a field project coming up soon that you'd like to share, please contact UCAR Education and Outreach to discuss the opportunity further. Free training on the interface can be done remotely and takes about 30 minutes. The postcards will be edited and translated into Spanish before being placed online. The Windows to the Universe Web site is visited by more than 21 million users annually.

New from COMET: Updates on bilingual material
The COMET Program is now issuing quarterly updates in Spanish highlighting new material that has been translated. If you wish to begin receiving these updates, you will need to be a registered user. Simply log in, navigate to "Change my account information", and check the box near the bottom of the form. A confirmation e-mail will be sent; you must reply to it in order for your e-mail address to be added to the list. Instructions can also be found on the "What's new" section of the main MetEd page below.
