David Hosansky
Writer/editor

What I do
I work with a talented team of writers, editors, Web developers, and others to handle media relations for the institution. My responsibilities include

  • scouting for news
  • issuing news releases
  • providing educational materials to the media
  • helping journalists set up interviews
  • facilitating film shoots
  • analyzing press coverage

I am also co-editor of Staff Notes Monthly, UCAR's internal newsletter.

My background
I joined UCAR in 2001, capping a diverse career in communications. After getting a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University in 1986, I reported for newspapers in Ohio and Florida. Eventually I landed in Washington, D.C., where I worked as a senior writer for Congressional Quarterly and covered such tumultuous political events as the impeachment of President Clinton. Satiated with politics, I began writing on a freelance basis in 1999 about science and the environment. I have won several regional and national journalism awards, including a public service award from the Society of Professional Journalists for articles on the health effects of pesticides. In 2004, I received an Excellence award from the Society for Technical Communication for a UCAR brochure, "Picturing Climate's Complexity: Community Climate System Model."

Some other interests
I like just about anything outdoors, especially hiking and bicycling. I also enjoy music and silent movies, and I produce muscial performances and movie screenings in my home town of Louisville, Colorado.
