UCAR and the City of Boulder Jointly Inaugurate New Bike and Pedestrian Path

February 22, 2006

BOULDER—The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 23, at the Center Green campus of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), to inaugurate a new, half-mile bike and pedestrian path. The path, which links UCAR's Foothills and Center Green campuses, travels under Foothills Parkway to connect the intersection of Mitchell Lane and 47th Street with the north end of Center Green Drive.

UCAR President Richard Anthes and Vice President for Finance and Administration Kathryn Schmoll will preside over the ribbon-cutting ceremony, located at 3080 Center Green Drive.

The $775,000 path was developed and funded by UCAR, the parent organization of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), in cooperation with the City of Boulder, White Rock Ditch Company, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, and the Colorado Department of Transportation. The path's maintenance will be passed to the City of Boulder, which will incorporate the path into its multiuse path network.

The path follows railroad tracks under an existing Foothills Parkway overpass and is fenced off from the tracks. The separation increases public safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

"This tremendous effort was three years in the making," said Marion Hammond, UCAR's project manager for the path. "We anticipate that travel between Center Green and 47th Street will be much safer and more convenient."
