Date

Date
19 - 20 September 2012

Location

NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction
5830 University Research Court
College Park, MD 20740

Workshop Goal

The workshop will bring together selected US

- researchers,
- operational meteorologists,
- members of the private sector, and
- agency program managers

representing expertise from the 3 main thrusts of the US THORPEX Science Plan

- processes and phenomena research,
- the science of prediction, and
- socioeconomic research and application

The goal of the workshop is for teams of participants to discuss and develop cross-cutting projects involving all 3 of the US THORPEX thrusts that could either be implemented with current resources or be submitted as proposals to funding agencies.

Workshop Format

- The first day of the workshop will include presentations on significant research priorities and emerging challenges related to the areas outlined in the US THORPEX Science Plan, as well as key tools for addressing these areas. Talks on meteorological science, operational forecasting, and social science will be intermixed, and ample time will be included for discussion.

- During the second day, we will continue the discussions in plenary and in breakout groups on several of the areas discussed during the previous day.  The focus of the breakout groups will be to formulate collaborative, cross-cutting projects.  The workshop will conclude with reports from each group and discussion of action items going forward.
