Materials Check-out & Delivery

Check out, Renew, Request, and Quickly Receiving Materials

All NCAR/UCAR employees and official visitors may check out library materials.

Obtain library materials immediately

Telephone the library location where the item that you need is held (CG Library ext.: 1187, FL Library ext.: 8505, ML Library exts.: 1180, 1184, or 1177). If available, the item you need can be delivered using the UCAR black bag service, scanned to your desktop as a PDF, faxed, or otherwise quickly delivered. If currently unavailable, the library can still institute rush service procedures to obtain what you need quickly.

Obtain materials needed within two or more days

Make an online request for a specific book, report, checked-out item or on- order item that is described in our catalog. Unless otherwise requested, you will receive it via interoffice mail. While viewing the record of the item that you need, choose Request, select Place Holds, enter your NCAR Library user i.d., and click on Place Request. The library will receive and process your request on the next working day. (For materials needed immediately, call the Library, x1180, x1184 (ML), 8505 (FL), or 1187 (CG).

Check out materials

Use our self service circulation computers to check out materials which show the NCAR Library barcode on the front. You'll need your NCAR employee i.d. number or to have your NCAR i.d. badge with you to do this. Check-out instructions are available next to the computer. (A librarian can find your i.d. number for you.) If you are unable to check out materials using the self-service circulation computer (for example, journals are not bar-coded), please fill out the blue universal checkout cards and leave them in the box located nearby. If you need information concerning the use of your library i.d. or your badge for check-out, call Mary Chavez at ext. 1184 or e-mail ncarcirc@ucar.edu.

Circulation periods

When you check out materials online, you’ll see their due dates on the computer screen. Textbooks and reports can be checked out for a month. If there is a waiting list, you may keep them two weeks, but you may request that we return them to you when next available. Most other materials do circulate for short periods but should be returned as soon as possible. A librarian can tell you the exact circulation period.

Renewals

Materials may be renewed twice. For renewals, e-mail ncarcirc@ucar.edu. For materials that you expect to refer to over a long period of time, ask the Library to order office copies for you. We’ll provide a form for your division’s program number to charge and an authorization signature.
