Interlibrary loan request
To obtain books, journals and other materials not held by the NCAR Library, forward an e-mail description of each item you need to Interlibrary loan at ncarill@ucar.edu. Be sure to specify the date by which you need requested materials.
Printed forms for requesting interlibrary loans also are available at each library facility. For urgent interlibrary loan needs or for other questions, please call Judy Litsey (jlitsey@ucar.edu) at ext. 1177. If Judy is not available, call Leslie Forehand (forehand@ucar.edu) at ext. 8505.
Journal articles and similar documents will likely arrive on your desktop as PDF files. Books will be borrowed from other libraries and sent to you via interoffice mail. If you have special delivery instructions, please specify them when ordering.
Check out, renew, or request materials
All NCAR/UCAR employees and official visitors may check out library materials.
Obtaining library materials immediately: Telephone the library location where the item that you need is held (CG Library ext.: 1187, FL Library ext.: 8505, ML Library exts.: 1175, 1177 or 1180). If available, the item you need can be delivered using the UCAR black bag service, scanned to your desktop as a PDF, faxed, or otherwise quickly delivered. If currently unavailable, the library can still instititute rush service procedures to obtain what you need speedily.
Obtaining materials needed within two or more days: Make an online request for a specific book, report, checked-out item or on- order item that is described in our library catalog. Unless otherwise requested, you will receive it via interoffice mail. While viewing the record of the item that you need, choose Request, select Place Holds, enter your NCAR Library user i.d., and click on Place Request. The library will receive and process your request on the next working day. (For materials needed immediately, call the Library, x1180, 1184 (ML), 8505 (FL), or 1187 (CG).
Checking out materials: Use our self service circulation computers to check out materials which show the NCAR Library barcode on the front. You'll need your NCAR employee i.d. number or to have your NCAR i.d. badge with you to do this. Check-out instructions are available next to the computer. (A librarian can find your i.d. number for you.) If you are unable to check out materials using the self-service circulation computer (for example, journals are not bar-coded), please fill out the blue universal checkout cards and leave them in the box located nearby. If you need information concerning the use of your library i.d. or your badge for check-out, call Mary Chavez at ext. 1184 or e-mail ncarcirc@ucar.edu
Circulation periods: When you check out materials online, you?ll see their due dates on the computer screen. Textbooks and reports can be checked out for a month. If there is a waiting list, you may keep them two weeks, but you may request that we return them to you when next available. Most other materials do circulate for short periods but should be returned as soon as possible. A librarian can tell you the exact circulation period.
Renewals: Materials may be renewed twice. For renewals, e-mail ncarcirc@ucar.edu. For materials that you expect to refer to over a long period of time, ask the Library to order office copies for you. We?ll provide a form for your division?s program number to charge and an authorization signature.
Circulation Desk: 303-497-1184, ncarcirc@ucar.edu
Request Library materials delivered by black bag service
Materials in the Library's online catalog each have a location designation (FL, ML, or CG). If the item is not at your site and you need it within 24 hours, call the library holding the item for black bag service. For books, journal articles, and other publications you know are at the FL Library call ext. 8505, for the ML Library call ext. 1180, and for the CG Library call ext. 1187.
Scan Library journal articles as an e-mail attachment
The ability to scan an article from a paper journal and send it as a PDF via email to yourself is now available at the ML, FL, and CG Libraries.
The ML, CG, and FL Libraries have each acquired a color printer that also serves as a scanner, copier, and fax machine for NCAR/UCAR staff. This new machine gives you the capability to scan a copy of a paper journal article in color or black and white, and e-mail it to yourself as a PDF. Instructions for scanning, faxing, copying, and printing are posted by the machine.
Reserve a Library conference room or study room
The Center Green
Library in CG1 offers 2 enclosed meeting rooms (numbers 2527 and 2547) which
seat 6 people comfortably and are equipped with speaker phones, internet
connectivity, and white boards. They do not have multimedia support. Both rooms
can be reserved through the room reservation system.
At the Mesa Library
there is an area where the technical reports are shelved that can be used as a
meeting or study space. The open area includes a large window, oak table, and
chairs that can accommodate a maximum of ten. There is connectivity for several
computers. To reserve the space, contact the ML Library Front Desk at ext.
1180.
Publish an NCAR Technical Note
Download, read and fill out the Approval Form for Technical Note Publication.
Be sure to have the form signed and dated by the assigned responsible reviewer and your division director. Send the completed form to Leslie Forehand.
After you receive a technical note number from Leslie, fill in the template for the Cover Page and place it at the beginning of your technical note.
If you have further questions, contact Leslie Forehand, ext. 8505, forehand@ucar.edu.
Make recommendations for acquisitions
Recommendations for the Library Collection: Have you recently noticed publications which would be useful additions to the NCAR Library? If so, please contact Judy Litsey (ext. 1177, jlitsey@ucar.edu). Recommendations might be books, journals, maps, reports, online publications, videos or other appropriate formats. We collect all pertinent scientific subjects, professional development publications, foreign language courses, and more. We welcome your personal recommendations for items having a high likelihood of use in UCAR endeavors. An incomplete reference is okay; we'll do the research to assure we don't already have the items you suggest.
Book Selection Committees: Do you want to serve as a regular selector of NCAR Library materials? By being a book selection committee member, you'll occasionally receive descriptions of new publications in a given subject area. Select from these items when received, or send your personal recommendations to the library instead. Click here to view the guidelines for selecting materials. Please contact Judy Litsey (ext. 1177, jlitsey@ucar.edu) to become involved.
Remote Access to the Library's electronic journals
UCAR/NCAR/UOP staff can access the Library's electronic journals and literature databases from anywhere in the world through the ezproxy system. Go to http://ezproxy.ucar.edu and enter your UCAS login and password. UCAR Library should fill the Resource box. Click on login.
