Guidelines for Book and Materials Selection
Back to the Selection and Aquisition Page
Proceedings
• As a general collection policy, we don’t purchase proceedings (with the exception of the American Meteorological Society’s standing order).
- These most often have limited usage and are not in high demand
- If a paper is needed, we will attempt to obtain through interlibrary loan
- These proceeding papers are not refereed
Collection of Papers (i.e. Advances in….. Lectures Notes……..)
• Usually don’t purchase collection of papers
• Not needed very often
• Not refereed as are journal articles
• Very rarely purchase titles with Editors or more than two authors (there can be exceptions)
What Do We Buy?
• Practical books in the computing field
• Reasonably priced
• New editions
- We check circulation records of previous editions
- If new edition is published every two years or so, we probably won’t
purchase every new edition
- Check book reviews from scientists
• If a book has been checked out numerous times, we do consider the purchase of another copy
• Usually purchase books published in the following countries:
United States
France
Germany
England
A portion of our collection development budget is now dedicated to online databases. i.e. 24 x 7 – computer books.
