UCAR Member Renewal

1. The University of Denver

The University of Denver has been a UCAR member since 1966. Atmospheric science research and instruction are carried out in the Department of Geography, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Department of Physics and Astronomy, and Department of Engineering.

The undergraduate and graduate atmospheric science courses emphasize atmospheric and environmental chemistry, radiation, and general meteorology and climatology. These courses provide students with a solid foundation for careers in air quality related fields. During the period 1999-2002 eighteen B.S., six M.S. and five Ph.D. degrees were completed. The department's projection for the completion of future degrees is consistent with the 1999-2002 numbers. The graduate students are primarily funded through teaching assistantships, research assistantships and fellowships. Students who have graduated from the various departments have been successful in obtaining careers in meteorology related fields. These careers cover a broad spectrum, including civilian government, military, and the private sector.

Faculty members from the various departments are active in atmospheric science related research and publish in many of the leading journals. Faculty extramural funding is good and is received from a number of agencies, including NASA, NSF, and NOAA.

The computing facilities, research facilities and meteorological instrumentation are extensive and serve both the research and instructional needs of the faculty and students. The research facilities include a climate lab, pollen lab, and geographical information science lab. The instrumentation includes a number of instruments for spectroscopy, aerosol characterization equipment, and three on-road emissions monitoring systems.

Faculty members from the various departments participate in UCAR/NCAR activities and are members/users of UCAR/UNIDATA.

The UCAR Membership Committee concludes that the membership criteria are fulfilled and recommends to the Members' Representatives that the membership of the University of Denver be continued as provided by the bylaws.
