Academic Affiliate Renewal
2. The State University of New York (SUNY)
College at Brockport
SUNY Brockport has been an affiliate member of UCAR since
1991. The Department of Earth Sciences provides interdisciplinary
instruction leading to a BS in Geology, Earth Science, Meteorology,
or Water Resources. There are seven core instructional and
research faculty. Twenty-six undergraduate courses are offered.
The Meteorology major has been in existence for 21 years and
its requirements meet federal employment guidelines for a
position as Meteorologist. The physical science orientation
of the Meteorology major enables students to enter various
fields, including environmental science, computational science,
hydrology, and wind energy utilization. From the Fall of 1999
to the Summer 2003, 41 students graduated with BS degrees.
The facilities in the Department of Earth Sciences have been
upgraded with a major renovation to Lennon Hall completed
in 2001. Most of the classrooms now have state-of-the-art
digital capability. A theater-style weather briefing room
is available for teaching and research, and it is part of
the College Weather Center. Here satellite, Doppler radar,
surface, and upper-air observations are continuously ingested
using a Sun Enterprise workstation with four processors. In
addition, a Doppler radar belonging to the local NBC affiliate,
WHEC Channel 10, is located on campus. Students have portable
atmospheric sounding equipment as well as analog and digital
recording instruments available for field observation of diverse
weather phenomena.
A hydrometeorologist has been hired recently, who will join
the existing faculty in Fall 2004. This will enable further
refinement and integration of the curricula. A System Administrator
has also been hired with the resulting benefits of less network
downtime and easier access to archived data. A review of the
department’s academic programs was completed two years ago.
The resulting self-study document came back from the reviewers
with the comment that, to their knowledge, no institution
of higher learning has ever succeeded as well as SUNY Brockport
in designing and implementing integrated curricula.
SUNY Brockport participates in the Unidata Internet Data
Delivery (IDD), and is the feeder site for several other institutions.
Two faculty members participated in the Unidata training in
2001. In 1999 and 2000 one faculty member attended the COMET
training programs. During the summer of 2003, a faculty member
provided technical assistance to the COMET Program in developing
a webcast on the El Niño Southern Oscillation Phenomenon.
The Member Committee concludes that the criteria for membership
in the UCAR Academic Affiliate Program have been fulfilled
and, as provided by the bylaws, approves the continuation
of the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Brockport
as an Academic Affiliate.
