How to Apply for Academic Affiliation

PROCEDURES FOR NEW AND RENEWAL
UCAR ACADEMIC AFFILIATE MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS

UCAR ACADEMIC AFFILIATE MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA AND APPLICATION/RENEWAL PROCEDURES

Below you will find UCAR Academic Affiliate membership and application information. Initial and renewal affiliate membership applications are subject to approval by the UCAR Membership Committee. The committee meets annually in early summer. If you have questions and/or would like more information about the application process, please contact the UCAR Corporate Affairs Office (see contact information below).

I. ACADEMIC AFFILIATE MEMBERSHIP TERM AND FEE

Academic Affiliate membership in UCAR is for an eight-year renewable term. There is an initial fee of $800 and an annual fee of $400. (An invoice will be sent to the department in late fall of each year.)  This fee partially covers the cost of administering the program and travel of the Academic Affiliate representative to Boulder to participate in the annual Academic Affiliates and UCAR Members meeting in October. If these fees preclude your institution from applying for academic affiliation, please contact Susan Friberg in the UCAR governance and membership office--303.497.1658; friberg@ucar.edu.

II. ACADEMIC AFFILIATE CRITERIA (from the UCAR Bylaws, Article 6, Section 1 www.ucar.edu/governance/members/ucar_bylaws.pdf)

Only universities and other nonprofit corporations organized and operated for educational or scientific purposes, and located within the United States, Canada, or Mexico, are eligible for UCAR academic affiliation provided they meet the following criteria:

  1. Program of Studies and Research. Has made a definitive, substantial, and continuing commitment to a full, coherent, and integrated program of course studies leading to a baccalaureate and/or graduate degree in one or more of the atmospheric sciences or related fields *;
  2. Progress in the Atmospheric Sciences. Has made a definitive, substantial, and continuing commitment to progress in the atmospheric sciences or related fields as evidenced by scholarly works of significance by its faculty in the atmospheric sciences or related fields and;
  3. Participation in the activities of UCAR. Has made, or—as might be the case of a new Affiliate—is willing to make, a clear commitment of active participation in UCAR activities, including its governance, programs, and facilities.

*Note: "Related" fields are those that deal directly with the study of the atmosphere(e.g., astrophysics, biogeochemistry, hydrology, geography, oceanography, space physics, and related societal research).

III. SUBMISSION OF MATERIALS FOR INITIAL OR RENEWAL APPLICATION

The Membership Committee meets annually to consider new and renewal affiliate applications, and acts at that time.

To apply for or renew your UCAR Academic Affiliate membership please submit the following material:

1. President’s Letter. Please submit a letter to the President of UCAR from your university's President or Chief Executive Officer affirming the university's commitment to the three criteria listed in Part II above along with the materials listed below.

2. Application Materials. Please submit a document and related material that demonstrate in a succinct way how your university meets the three criteria listed above. The document should generally consist of 3-5 pages total (not including attachments) addressing each of the following:

Briefly describe, and provide websites if available for UCAR-related department(s) and program(s) (e.g., names of departments or programs, number of faculty, research staff, and students; type of degrees awarded; instructional and research facilities). Please note other relevant information and any significant programmatic changes that may occur over the next 3-5 years. Please include the number of degrees granted over the past 5 years and include as an attachment, a short CV (~2 pages) for each faculty member listing professional and academic essentials (e.g., education and employment history, tenure status, and a list of up to ten recent relevant publications).
