Who We Are
| At the National Center
for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), we study some of the most difficult
problems in weather and climate research.
No single person or institution can do that alone. NCAR’s
research involves scientists from universities and research laboratories
around the world. Over 60 universities are members of the University
Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), the nonprofit
organization that manages NCAR. For the past 40 years, NCAR has received
the majority of its support from the National
Science Foundation (NSF). |

Explore Wildfire Science
Wildland fire weather is one of the complicated problems
NCAR’s teams of scientists love to tackle!
The behavior of a wildfire depends on the terrain, the type of fuel
that is burning (trees, shrubs, or grasses), and the weather.
|
NCAR scientists learn a lot by observing wildfires
from our C-130 research aircraft. Instruments on the plane collect data as
our pilot steers close to the fire. Inside the plane, scientists, engineers,
and mathematicians control the instruments and study computer displays of
the data. Huge volumes of
information are stored by computers so the wildfire can be studied later
at NCAR.
