NCAR Annual closure information

NCAR's Mesa Lab Visitor Center is open seven days a week, except for occasional maintenance or inclement weather closures.

Facility Maintenance Closures

Maintenance closures are announced online well in advance of the date. Typically, annual closures are due to the need to power down the facility for supercomputer maintenance. This occurs once in the spring each year, usually on a Saturday in April, and once in the fall, usually on a Saturday in October. The closure date for fall 2011 is scheduled for Saturday, October 15.

Inclement or Severe Weather

Closures due to severe weather are broadcast over radio station KOA - 850 AM, on the Public Visitor Center phone recording, on UCAR's Safety and Security Information Hotline. The decision to close the building to the public is typically made prior to 6:00 a.m. If the Mesa Lab is closed, the road will also be closed to all automobile, bicycle and pedestrian traffic except for maintenance, security and other essential personnel.

Occasionally, closures must occur while staff and visitors are in the building. In this situation, visitors will be asked to leave the building as promptly as possible for their own safety.  Teachers and event planners whose tour and/or field trip is cancelled or interrupted, will be contacted by NCAR's Visitor Program staff to reschedule at a later date.
