1999 Race Results -- Divisional
RelayWhen ASP decides to field a team on its own, look out! The two times that they have done so, they have handily won participation (being a small division) and have turned in fast times (being a young division), adding up to wins. A little competitive edge doesn't hurt, as Matt Wheeler explains: "Well, we were definitely in it to win it. We started recruiting for the ASP team many weeks in advance, even going to the extent of stealing some of the best runners from other divisions, provided that they were at least partly on the ASP pay-roll!" Wearing ASP bibs so that they would recognize each other, ASP broke the 6-minute barrier, only to be caught in the final 500 meters by ACD for the fastest time since 1990. RAP combined fleet speed and high participation for a 3rd place finish.

| 1. | ASP | 5:56 | 20/59% | 2.8 |
| 2. | ACD | 5:54 | 25/20% | 2.8 |
| 3. | RAP | 6:12 | 44/40% | 2.8 |
| 4. | SCD | 6:36 | 33/31% | 3.0 |
| 5. | HAO | 6:35 | 34/54% | 2.6 |
| 6. | MMM | 6:40 | 25/26% | 2.8 |
| 7. | ATD/COMET | 6:55 | 14/8% | 2.8 |
| 8. | CGD | 6:10 | 35/31% | 1.8 |
| 9. | UOP | 7:34 | 17/28% | 2.8 |
The formula is as follows: Normalized time + (.35)normalized participation + normalized ice, where normalized time = (slowest time - measured time)/(slowest time - fastest time), normalized participation = (measured participation rate - lowest participation rate)/(highest participation rate - lowest participation rate), and normalized ice = (measured ice weight - lowest ice weight)/(highest ice weight - lowest ice weight).
Here are the numerical results based by the above formula:

| Division | Final | |
| 1. | ASP | 2.163 |
| 2. | ACD | 1.918 |
| 3. | RAP | 1.873 |

| 5. | HAO | 1.573 |
| 6. | MMM | 1.494 |
| 7. | ATD/COMET | 1.223 |
| 8. | CGD | 0.997 |
| 9. | UOP | 0.972 |
What is the magic number of runners to have on the hill? The below figures show the actual number of runners that each division entered; the first table at top of page reflects runners + volunteers.
| Relay - Time | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Division | Time | Runners | |
| 1. | ACD | 5:54 | 23 |
| 2. | ASP | 5:56 | 20 |
| 3. | CGD | 6:10 | 33 |
| 4. | RAP | 6:12 | 39 |
| 5. | HAO | 6:35 | 34 |
| 6. | SCD | 6:36 | 29 |
| 7. | MMM | 6:40 | 25 |
| 8. | ATD/COMET | 6:55 | 14 |
| 9. | UOP | 7:34 | 16 |
Participation is weighted at 35% because historically there is a much wider variation between participation than time - giving participation equal weight with time would skew the results.

Did SCD start out with more ice than the other divisions? The final results are the same with weighing SCD's ice at 2.8 lbs, so don't complain, HAO! On the other hand, CGD's dropping of their ice dropped them from 4th to 8th place.
