1999 Race Results - Bike RaceIn spite of a localized atmospheric atmospheric disturbance right at the start of the race, Alan Hills took 22 seconds off of his time from last year, but was edged out by first-time racer Arlie Huffman. Arlie says: "Right at the starting line, I nearly crashed because of my rear wheel slipping on the wet pavement. Fortunately, I managed to recover and stay right on Alan's wheel for the first 200 meters or so. The people clapping and yelling at the top were big motivators, which I greatly appreciated at that stage of the race." Myron McCallum attributes the wind to adding 20 seconds to his time from last year, but still moved up from 8th place to 3rd. Anne-Marie Tarrant reports that she hadn't done much biking recently before joining NCAR/RAP this spring, where Alan Hills encouraged her to race. "I had a good coach," she says about her win. She also credits other RAP coworkers for lending her a bike, bike shoes, and lots of advice. She says, "Next year, I'd like to attach a tow line to Andrew Crook to improve my time!" Like last year, Christine Shields was once again aced out of first place by 2 seconds, but Judith Berner improved her finish from 4th to 3rd.
* Jeff Boote was accompanied by daughter Randi Sue, age 5, on a Trail- a-bike. Randi Sue was heard to spur Dad on ("Come on! Come on!") as they overtook Becky Ruttenberg at the middle of the hill. ** Bob Henson, Leonard Sitongia, Karl Hanzel, Joanne Dunnebeck, and Carol Nicolaidis inaguarated TAP's fleet of blue bikes - old bikes donated by staff for day use - ala the City's green "Spokes for Folks" bikes. The blue bikes range from clunkers to quite nice - Bob was on a 14-speed, Leonard on a 10-speed and Karl chugged away on a 3-speed. In addition, Karl fitted the rear wheels with playing cards attached by clothes pins to make a satifsying whirring noise in the spokes. Although Bob broke away to race competively, Leonard and Karl circled Becky a few times before dropping back to form a pack with Joanne and Carol. In addition, Joanne was joined by her husband John Wiener pulling their daughter Claire (42 lbs, nearly 5) in a trailer to a time of 18:32:20. Return to 1999 Race Results. |
