Changing your UCAS Password

To change your UCAS password, you will use the password proxy utility on the password.ucar.edu host. See step 1) below. You will need to use an ssh client to reach the password change facility.

Once you have connected, follow the prompts to change your UCAS password. This is step 2) below. For this to work, you will need to know both your login (the part of your email address before the "@ucar.edu") and your old UCAS password. If you do not remember your old UCAS password, your division, group, or program system administrators can make the change for you.

When you change your UCAS password, please change it to something strong. You can generally create a strong and memorable password for yourself by building an acronym from a phrase or sentence or taking two words together, while mixing punctuation, numbers, and capital letters into it, for a total of 6 to 14 characters. Many people find shocking nonsense phrases that they would never say in polite company fairly easy to remember, and unlikely for anyone else to guess.

1.) Connecting

Here's how you run an ssh client on UNIX/Mac OS X, or MS Windows, and use it to connect to the UCAS password change facility.

UNIX / Mac OS X

At your shell prompt (you can get one on Mac OS X by running Terminal in your Applications/Utilities folder), type:

        ssh password.ucar.edu

to reach the password change facility.

MS Windows

Run your third party SSH client, and connect to password.ucar.edu. If you do not currently have an ssh client supplied by your division, we suggest you use the most recent version of the free putty ssh client.

2.) Changing

When you connect via ssh to the proxy host, it will ask you to log in using your username (login) and your old UCAS password. Once you have logged in, type the following at the prompt:

password

and follow the subsequent prompts from the password change proxy.

The proxy will first ask you for your username and old UCAS password. Once you have provided those. It will then ask you to type in your new password twice.

After you receive a message that the password has been changed, type 'quit' to exit the proxy. If you have problems, contact your division's help desk or system administration staff for assistance.
