The Children's Holiday Party will be this Saturday from 10:30 to 2:30. There are many events planned for the children to do. This year, we have had the best response ever, however, we don't have enough EAC members to help with the party. We are needing volunteers from the staff to help with this party. Most positions need only volunteer for an hour or so. We really want this year's event to be the best ever. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact, Roseann Suer, at roseann@ucar.edu or ext 8876, or Scott Briggs at sbriggs@ucar.edu or ext 1607 or Jennifer DeLaurant at delauran@ucar.edu or ext 1263.

The NCAR/UCAR/UOP Annual Awards Ceremony and Holiday Party will be Friday, December 13th at Center Green. The festivities will begin at 3 pm sharp, with a String Quintet, the Papillion Chamber Players, featuring Dave Fulker and including NCAR's own Becky Ruttenberg from RAP, leading the event in the lobby area. The awards ceremony will begin at 3:30 pm in the auditorium. The entertainment will be a local group, The Fab 4, a Beatles cover group. If you haven't seen them, now is your chance. Food Services will, as always, provide their excellent food and drink. This year's event promises to be the best ever, so be sure to join the EAC and your fellow co-workers at this year's celebration. Please also note the change in venue, as it will be held at NCAR's newest edition, Center Green. There are still rooms available at the Marriott Residence Inn for only $84.00.

Progress on the Mesa Lab Utilities Refurbishment Project in
A-Tower has been very good, and the project remains on schedule.
This week, the exhibits and the Science Store are being moved
out of the Lobby. The Science Store is being moved to the Lobby of
FL2, and should be open for your business on December 10th.
Beginning on December 9th, and continuing for approximately one
week, scaffolding will be erected in the ML Lobby. This will be a
very noisy activity and your understanding is appreciated. Lobby
ceiling demolition will begin on December 10th.

You are invited to attend an Advanced Technolgy Seminar presented by William D. Bacjalo, Ph.D. from Atrium Technologies, Inc. Sunnyvale,CA on Tuesday, December 10,2002 at 10:30 a.m. in the Foothills Laboratory, Building 2, Auditorium Room 1022. Refreshments will be served. Cloud droplet size distribution is one of the key controlling factors in determining cloud radiative properties. Cloud liquid water content is also an important integral quantity in cloud physics. Improved ability of instruments to measure drops in the 3 to 150 m size range would be extremely useful for the advancement of remote sensing of cloud drops in this size range. In the early 1980s, the Phase Doppler Interferometer (PDI), was invented by Dr. Bachalo and developed for in-situ measurement of individual droplet diameter and velocity. PDI has been demonstrated to have several advantages over light scattering intensity devices such as the Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP) for cloud droplet size distribution measurement. The measurement principle is based on light scattering interferometry, which utilizes the wavelength of light as the measurement scale. The light wavelength is not affected by contaminated optics, electronic drift, or light beam extinction. Thus, the device is resistant to the effects of the measurement environment and does not require frequent calibration. Furthermore, the signals have a unique sinusoidal character allowing the application of advanced Fourier transform methods for reliable and accurate detection and analyses even in low SNR conditions. The PDI method has undergone almost two decades of development and evolution, and is now mature with the measurement capability fully validated and the error sources identified and reconciled. The instrument has a proven overall measurement range of from 0.5 to 5000 m with a size dynamic range of 50:1 (measurement range at one instrument setting). Recent developments in the detectors and signal processing are expected to extend the size dynamic range to 100:1. Droplet measurement rates in excess of 50,000/sec have been achieved. Since the instrument measures the drop velocity simultaneously and provides information on the sample volume size, the drop number density, volume flux, and liquid water content are also obtained. In this seminar, the basic light scattering phenomena used in the phase Doppler method will be described. The approach used for interrogating the light scattering interference information will be presented and discussed. Signal processing methods will be reviewed as a means for emphasizing the robust nature of this approach to droplet characterization. Advantages of the light scattering interferometry relative to light scattering intensity methods will be emphasized. Methods used to confirm the performance and measurement accuracy will be presented to confirm the measurement capabilities. Some examples of measurements in difficult environments will be presented.
