For those who are unaware, lunchtime basketball has regularly taken place at the court just north of FL1 for several years. We are looking for some new players to get things going again, as attendence has dropped off. If you are interested in playing, send me an email and we'll get you in sync with the group. Typically we try to play at 11:30am in the summer. Games are typically 4-on-4 or 3-on-3.

The Library has subscribed to Essential Science Indicators produced by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) as a tool for gauging science performance statistics and trends over the most current ten years based on numbers of journal articles published and numbers of citations to these journal articles. ESI can be used to compare this information for institutions publishing in particular fields such as geosciences or environment/ecology. To search by institution, select the institution's name from an alphabetical list. You'll retrieve a table showing the significant fields in which that institution publishes and also listing that institution's numbers of citations and publications in each applicable field. Click on the field name to examine citation and publication rankings for institutions publishing there. To explore the variety of rankings available using ESI, including the most cited papers in each field, access the Info. Resources page from the Library home page and select Essential Science Indicators.

Dr. Mark Eiswerth of the University of Nevada will discuss two tools for assessing societal impacts of extreme events. When: Thursday, June 13, 10:00 a.m. Where: FL1-2133 ABSTRACT: Assessing social and economic impacts of extreme weather is challenging due to characteristics of both the environmental processes involved and social responses to them. These characteristics include uncertainty regarding natural systems and the effectiveness of mitigation and adaptation strategies; the multiple-attribute nature of extreme events and climate change; the tendency of extreme events to lie outside the experience of many individuals and institutions; and the dynamic nature of the problem. I discuss two tools that address these characteristics. First, contingent behavior (CB) analysis is an emerging approach for analyzing (and valuing) the reactions of people and enterprises to environmental change scenarios that are not common in history. I present an application of CB analysis to recreational impacts of water level changes at a Western U.S. lake that is drying up, and discuss other potential uses. Second, stochastic dynamic programming and fuzzy logic are appropriate to the analysis of optimal dynamic decision making in the presence of uncertainty and scarce data. I present an application to biological invasions, and point to linkages and potential uses relevant to extreme weather.

Do you remember back to your elementary school days, and fire drills? Well we're going to do them here too! There will be a couple of changes this year. First, we're asking divisions to assemble together at designated locations. Your safety committee representative will have a map of the designated locations. Second, we will be placing a pretend fire somewhere in the building so you may have to choose an alternate exit. Please be thinking of two ways out of your area. You can expect to hear the alarms at Foothills Lab buildings 1,2,3,4 on Tuesday June 11; and at the Mesa Lab on Wednesday June 12.

We have a new address that you can forward spam messages to. In case anyone doesn't know, "spam" is a colloquial term for Unsolicited Bulk E-mail, or junk e-mail, if you will. Forward spam messages that you receive to spam@ucar.edu. For the moment, all we are doing is counting the number of spams, to guage the severity of the problem. We are considering implementing mail blocks against misconfigured systems on the Internet that are frequently used by spammers. This would have to be approved by management before it could be implemented, but if we do it, the counts from the spam@ucar.edu alias could also be used to guage the effectiveness of any anti-spam measures that are put in place. For more information on spam, how they do it, why they do it, what you can do about it, etc., please see the SPAM Information link below.
