For security reasons, the FedEx dropoff/pickup for Foothills Lab has been relocated to the FL1 mailroom, instead of the front desk. For your convenience, you can leave your FedEx letters and packages at your mailstops, and Traffic Services will be glad to pick them up. Or, just drop them off at the mailroom prior to 4 pm. After 4 pm, and before 5 pm, the dropoff is located on the platform by the dock area on the east side of FL1. This will be a permanent change. This does not affect the Mesa Lab. Thanks for your flexibility!

Friday, December 21 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM ML Visualization Lab Presenter: Steve Smith Deep Video Imaging Ltd http://www.actualdepth.com/ Hosts: Tim Scheitlin and Mary Haley Steve Smith will be demoing a multiplanar (quasi-3D) computer monitor. When you see one of their displays with the naked eye, you get the impression of looking into a fishtank. This is because there is a real Z-axis dimension in the unit. Their monitors incorporate two LCDs separated by an optical stack. This allows you to overlap and interrelate images and data. For example, weather maps can be superimposed over satellite pictures of weather systems, FLIR over other types of RADAR, and items at different altitudes or depths can be shown at different levels within the monitor. Separating information onto different planes helps people to understand and utilize it more effectively. One of the strengths of the technology is that it runs on conventional Mac and Pentium computers and off-the-shelf graphics cards or one dual-head unit. Another approach is to use two completely discrete sources. This device is tailor-made for multiple sources, such as computer data layered over live video.
For more information, contact Mary Haley at 1254, haley@ucar.edu.

FROM: Tom Windham SUBJECT: Call for mentors for SOARS summer 2002 Program "I have been involved with students' programs throughout the years. But, my experience with the SOARS program has been a one-of-a kind experience. This program has more than exceeded my expectations in that it has helped not only the protgs but everyone who has been involved in the program. The students, through their diverse backgrounds and cultures have exposed mentors and other UCAR staff to different values, beliefs, language, and practices, good steps toward the understanding of diversity. I have enjoyed working with young people who are smart, technically savvy, care free, optimistic about their futures, and whose persuasion skills are so good as to convince me to go sky-diving with them. Tom Windham needs to be commended for the excellence of the SOARS program." - Norma Beasant SOARS invites all UCAR, NCAR and UOP staff to volunteer as a science/technical research, scientific writing, or community mentor for the summer 2002 SOARS program, 31 May - 9 August. The Desktop Systems Advisory Group (DSAC) strongly recommends against the purchase of the HOME edition of Microsoft XP. The Windows XP HOME edition cannot network with UCAR's Windows network, while the Windows XP PROFESSIONAL edition can. Check with your System Administrators before making a purchase to determine your division's support policy on the Windows XP Operating System. Please email questions to Desktop Systems Advisiory Committee, dsac@ucar.edu.
