FROM: Tom Windham SUBJECT: Call for mentors for SOARS summer 2001 Program "I looked forward each week to lunchtime meetings with my protege." said Zhenya Gallon, a SOARS scientific writing mentor. "It's exciting to work with a talented young person who's grappling with new concepts and new challenges. I also enjoyed being part of a community of mentors, meeting to share our knowledge and experience in such an intimate, effective and rewarding way. If you've been thinking about volunteering with SOARS, do it. You'll be very glad you did." SOARS invites all UCAR, NCAR and UOP staff to volunteer as a science/technical research, scientific writing or community mentor for the summer 2001 SOARS program, 4 June - 10 August. Here is a brief overview of the mentor types and their roles. Science or Technical Research Mentor: Provides a protege with the opportunity to work with the mentor on a current research project and provides instruction and coaching to the protege during the research project; collaborates with other mentors and SOARS staff to promote the success of the protege and the SOARS program. Scientific Writing and Communication Mentor: Provides a protege with coaching in the written and oral communication of her/his research project and collaborates with other mentors and SOARS staff to promote the success of the protege and the SOARS program. Community Mentor: Provides a protege with helpful information about our organization and helps the protege transition into the UCAR/NCAR/UOP and Boulder communities; collaborates with a protege and protege's mentors to facilitate the protege's ability to communicate her/his research to the general public; collaborates with other mentors and SOARS staff to promote the success of the protege and the SOARS program. Mentors will be offered an orientation and training session. At their meeting on November 15, the President's Council approved a plan to transfer the Telecommunications function from the Information Technology division in UCAR Finance and Administration to the Networking Section in NCAR Scientific Computing Division. The plan is based on the fact that the two groups work together and support each other's efforts in engineering and installation projects. It was also noted that the data and voice communication technologies are moving toward one another, and could soon lose their separate identities. Both groups are funded from the Communications Indirect Cost Pool, and serve the entire organization. The merged group is expected to benefit from some efficiencies in operations and planning. However, the overall needs of the organization for telecommunications and networking services will continue to be provided at the present high level. The transfer is effective November 26, the beginning of the pay period. Questions regarding the transfer can be addressed to Marla Meehl or Teresa Shibao. Katy Schmoll, VP for Finance and Administration, UCAR Steve Dickson, Associate Director for Operations, NCAR
For more information, contact Marla Meehl at 1301, marla@ucar.edu.

We've gotten several questions about adding images to TW postings. Since TW (in its email incarnation) is a text-only medium, we are not currently equipped to handle graphics in TW postings. However, you can refer to images on the web by doing the following: In Step 8 of the Announcements or Classifies posting form, give your image some sort of title, such as "Fishpack fish." Then put the direct URL to an image stored on your local web site, such as http://www.scd.ucar.edu/css/software/fishpack/fishpack.gif, into the address field. Then people will be able to view your image by clicking the link, or copying the URL into their web browser.

Reaching Students, Educators, and the Public through Web-based Outreach: Lessons Learned and Resources Available through the Windows to the Universe Project Roberta M. Johnson, Scientist and UCAR Director of Education and Public Outreach Monday, December 4, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. FL2 main seminar room #1022 The use of the web for educational purposes has become increasingly pervasive over the past few years. Both in formal and informal educational settings, students, and educators of all ages are commonly accessing web-based content and activities for research purposes as well as for enjoyment. The Windows to the Universe project, initiated in 1995, has grown in use to now serve over 3 million users per year, 70% of whom are precollege, undergraduate, or graduate students. In the course of developing this web site, we have learned valuable web development lessons and also have developed tools which other successful web sites may need to serve large user communities. The purpose of this presentation is to share information about the project, how it was developed, lessons learned along the way, and resources available to UCAR/NCAR/UOP through the project.

We are glad to see so much interest in this fun family event and look forward to seeing everyone Saturday 2 December!

The on-line, FY2001 Staff Development Catalog is now available at: http://www.fin.ucar.edu/hr/hrstaffdev/index.html. The catalog provides a variety of classes in the areas of communication, personal development, supervisory/management, technical skills and safety trainings. The catalog includes course descriptions, dates, times, locations, recommended audiences and registration information. All Staff Development courses are free of charge to UCAR staff and visitors. A new item in the FY2001 catalog is information on the new Corporate Technical Training Center (CTTC) http://www.fin.ucar.edu/hr/hrstaffdev/sdcttc.html. The CTTC, located at the Pearl Street location, is scheduled to open January 2001. All of the technical/computer classes offered through the Staff Development catalog will be held at the CTTC. The CTTC will be available for divisions/programs to use as well. Technical information about the CTTC is located at the site. The scheduling component for the CTTC is currently being developed; please contact Cheryl Cristanelli directly with any scheduling questions. Another new item in the catalog is the introduction of the new Internal Training Locator http://www.fin.ucar.edu/hr/hrstaffdev/sdlocator.html. This site provides information on numerous internal trainings and resources offered by various divisions and programs to UCAR staff. If your division/program/group would like to add training/resource information to the site, please feel free to contact Cheryl Cristanelli. A hard copy of the Staff Development catalog will be sent to each division/program administrator to share with staff that may not have access to the on-line catalog. To help keep costs low and reduce the volume of paper, the number of hard copies will be limited to one copy per division/program. As always, the Staff Development classes are developed to help address the training needs of UCAR staff. We welcome your comments and suggestions to help make these resources a valuable tool for the entire UCAR organization. If you have any questions or need any assistance, please feel free to contact Cheryl Cristanelli, 303-497-8708, cherylc@ucar.edu. Thank you for your support and participation.
