Don't forget...the Awards Ceremony and Holiday Party is today at ML. The festivities begin at 3:00 with entertainment by Excalibur, the Fairview High School Jazz Choir. Following the entertainment will be the presentation of the UCAR Outstanding Performance Awards and recognition of a very special group of NCAR/UCAR employees. Food and beverages will be available in the cafeteria beginning at 4:15.

The sale lasts until friday or until our stock runs out! The responce has been overwhelming at both Mesa and Foothills on buying these shirts. Today we just restocked with the last bit of shirts we have left, but, sizes and colors are limited. There were quite a few adult XXL, XL, and L that we restocked with. We also have quite a few adult smalls that you could buy for your older children (and there a few childrens sizes). However, if you don't act fast you might miss out. The discount price is a steal at $7.00 for adult sweatshirts and $5.00 for T-shirts and childrens sweatshirts. Grab a few for Holiday gift giving. Shirts are available at either the ML or FL2 reception desks. After the sale we will donate the excess to Rene Munoz for the childrens education programs and/or charity. So this will be your last chance to pick up older shirts. Remember 1998 shirts were a classic design...

When you can't find a book or report in the NCAR Library online catalog, you can go to a database called WorldCat, search for the item you want and directly order it via interlibrary loan. The NCAR Library will forward it to you when it arrives. Instructions: From the Library website (http://www.dir.ucar.edu/iss/lib/) click on the Info Resources button at the top of the screen. Click on FirstSearch, then click on the WorldCat database. After you have found the record for the book or report you need, click on the Get/Display button. On the following two screens click on the ILL button and then on the Continue button. The only information you need to enter in the ILL (interlibrary loan) form is your name, building, e-mail address and phone number. After completing the form click on the ILL button to send your request.

This is to clarify some details about the posting of announcements to the morning email: You can post your announcement any time. However, since announcements must be reviewed before they are published, there are a few things to keep in mind. If you post after 5 p.m., with a start date of "tomorrow," a day will be added to the start date so that TW staff may examine your announcement before it is sent to all staff. So if you post at 5 p.m. on Monday for "tomorrow", your announcement will be published in the *Wednesday* morning email. Announcements posted after 5 p.m. Thursday will be sent the following Monday, and those posted Friday after 5 p.m. or over the weekend will be sent on Tuesday. You are also advised to be careful if you are posting close to a holiday, as the morning email only goes out on work days. Make sure that you manually select the begin date so your announcement starts on a work day.

Feeling any effects of the holidays yet? Why not fight back by joining the FL Fitness Class for a healthy workout of aerobic and body-toning exercises. Classes are held Mondays & Wednesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. Cost is $3 for drop-ins or $2.50 per class with 10-punch card purchase. It's never too late to get started...

"Seasons Greetings" Won't you brighten this holiday season for Boulder-area children in need? The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys-for-Tots Program is asking for donations for this worthy cause. UCAR has two locations where you can bring toys or other donation items. Just look for the brightly colored boxes with the Toys-for-Tots signs. Items most needed include new or nearly-new toys or bikes for children under 12, or used computers for children 12-14 years of age. Checks are also accepted payable to Share-A-Gift. All donated items are tax deductible. Drop-Off locations: FL-2 Lobby near the receptionist desk ML-in the main lobby just below the mezzanine Bring in your items soon. The boxes will be picked up on TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14. Thank you for your generosity during this giving season.

Payroll reminds you that W-2 Forms for 1999 will be delivered through the U.S. Mail again this year. Please be sure that Human Resources has your correct address. Also, please double check that your name and Social Security number appear correctly on your personal information. This is also the time to check your W-4 status for 2000, and make any necessary updates. Be sure your latest W-4 has all your current information and that your name agrees with that on your current Social Security card. Please note: changing your address on your W-4 form will not automatically change your address in the Human Resources data base. As for 2000 withholding, the Social Security tax rate will remain at 6.2%, with the maximum taxable wage base for Social Security increasing to $76,200. The Medicare tax rate will remain the same at 1.45%, with no limit on wages subject to Medicare tax.

Books designated for discard from the NCAR Library collection at the Mesa Laboratory will begin to appear on the discard table in the Mesa Library today, Friday, December 3. As the weeding process progresses more books will be added to the table. Discarded books from the Foothills Library will be made available at a future date to be announced.

In place of the usual December issue, Staff Notes Monthly will recognize the 40th anniversary of UCAR/NCAR and the upcoming millennium with a special double issue for December/January. This large-format issue (11x17") will be packed with photos and tidbits from the institutional vaults. Look for the millennial SN in the first work week of 2000.

Living Wills and Directives Tuesday, 14 December 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. ML-Damon Facilitated by Nancy Montagnoli, Kaiser Permanente Education Center. Discussions will revolve around how you or loved ones can legally designate someone to handle your personal/business affairs should an unfortunate event leave you incapacitated. UPCOMING EVENTS IN JANUARY 2000 UCAR Health Fairs Mark your calendars now for the annual UCAR Health Fairs. The upcoming health fairs will include many new and exciting features, which are briefly outlined below. The hours for the health fairs have also been extended to allow increased participation in all of the exciting events. The health fairs will provide: cholesterol and blood pressure screening, blood prostrate cancer screening, hearing and vision screenings, body mass analysis, and chair massages. Many health information booths will also be added including: The Hall of Life--Drug and Alcohol Prevention, Boulder County Department of Health, Organ Donation information, as well as give-aways and refreshments. The health fair will be free of charge to all UCAR employees, their immediate family members and retirees. Pre-registration will be required for the blood screenings.
