The EAC has recently received a number of questions regarding discounts that are no longer valid. The discounts that we sponsor vary from time to time, depending on the membership of the EAC and the discounts that the current membership is willing or able to negotiate. If you have questions about EAC events or discounts, please refer to our website. The website lists our current members and discounts, as well as which EAC member to contact for specific questions. The Employee Activities Committee (EAC) meets today at 3:30 in the ML Cafeteria. If you would like to consider becoming a member of the EAC you are cordially invited to attend. The only requirement for joining the EAC is to be an employee of UCAR/NCAR/UOP. We meet once each month, alternating meeting sites between FL & ML. Not only is participation in this committee a lot of fun, but it's also a great opportunity to get to know others within this organization.

Mat classes are non-impact, designed to build strength and flexibility, with focus on articulating the joints of the body while maintaining pelvic and shoulder stabilization. Learning to use the body efficiently while moving with your breath is like having the owners' manual for the body! Pilates mat classes are perfect for travel and home exercise. All you need is your body and a mat. If you have injuries, I recommend that you contact me to schedule a private session to evaluate whether this class is right for you and to learn modifications of the exercises. You may begin classes any time. No need to wait until the beginning of a session. Try your first class free! The recently built NCAR Theater is now open to visitors. Playing continuously is a new seven-minute video introducing some of the ways the atmosphere is studied-from the surface of the Earth to the surface of the sun. After viewing the video, you can try your hand on NCAR's newest exhibit, moving magnets on the surface of the Flow Tank to see how smooth and turbulent patterns develop in its swirling fluid. Studying flow patterns helps increase our understanding of weather patterns and is also useful for designing cars, ships, and anything else that moves fast. As a reminder, exhibit areas of the Mesa Lab are open to the public, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on weekends and holidays.

Attending for entire meeting: Rick Anthes, Walt Dabberdt, Jack Fellows, Bob Serafin, and Katy Schmoll Attending for Item 1: Steve Dickson and Steve Sadler Attending for item 2: Steve Sadler Attending for item 3: Dan Wilson and Rena Brasher-Alleva Attending for item 4: Bruce Donaldson, Jeff Reaves, Dan Wilson, Merc Mercure, Stephen Simmons Attending for items 6-8: Susan Friberg and Lucy Warner Attending for item 10: Cindy Schmidt 1. Y2K Physical Security: The President's Council, based on recommendations from Steve Sadler and Steve's conversations with CU and the City of Boulder on this subject, decided the following: a. All UCAR facilities will be closed from 6:00 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999 to 6:00 a.m. Monday, January 3, 2000. Access to the facilities will be restricted during this time to previously authorized staff and additional security will be in place. b. All UCAR staff are encouraged to remain away from UCAR premises during the weekend. We will develop a list of employees needing access for business purposes during the time we are closed. Divisions and Programs will be asked to identify employees to be included on the list. Employees whose names are not on the list will not be permitted access; however, there will be points of contact for the divisions and programs who can approve on-the-spot entry. c. The Mesa Lab Road will be closed to uphill traffic starting at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, reopening at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 1, 2000. Visitors on- site will be asked to leave no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday. We will post appropriate signs to inform the public. d. A website will be developed outlining our plans for the New Year's weekend. 2. Ergonomics: The President's Council reiterated that it is the responsibility of each Division and Program Director to offer appropriate ergonomic equipment to their employees and to pay for it out of division or program funds. Such equipment is a necessary and reasonable cost of doing business. Proper ergonomics are an important consideration in employee well being, and each Division and Program Director should make it a priority. This will be a topic of discussion at the December UMC. 3. General Purpose Equipment: Dan Wilson shared with the President's Council several requests for use of bond proceeds for direct equipment (equipment that can be purchased with direct or program funds), totaling $1.4 million, which is in excess of the remaining flexibility of $1.2 million on the 1999 bond funds. The President's Council agreed that the first priority for use of bond funds is for indirect equipment (equipment that can only be purchased using indirect funds), since this is the only mechanism for funding indirect equipment needs. However, if a case can be made for funding equipment for direct programs, bond funds can be used if available. To that end, the Divisions and Programs will be asked to identify any equipment funding needs. We will try to do this review once a year consistent with the normal budget review cycle, realizing that there may be a few requests that might have to be considered out of cycle. The President's Council will then determine the items to be funded from bond proceeds. Dan will make a presentation on this topic at the December UMC. 4. WITI: Bruce Donaldson presented a status report on various WITI activities. WITI's business plan focuses on wide use of WeatherWindow, a location-specific forecast product directed to the general public and distributed via mass market internet and wireless systems. The President's Council requested a further update in December from WITI. 5. CA/ISS Structure: We discussed Walt's and Jack's analysis of the recent CA/ISS Review Panel suggestions. In principle, there was agreement that we should refine UCAR's outreach and education strategies, to make the costing of outreach services consistent across the institutions, and to establish an education council to help coordinate the education activities. We ran out of time on this topic and will take it up again at the December meeting. 6. Survey: We discussed Rick's revised survey based on the UMC input. All members of the Council are asked to comment on this revised version. Susan Friberg and Lucy Warner will work on the distribution database. 7. BAMS Article: We decided that this effort should now focus on developing two products:(1) a longer, UCAR-produced document highlighting the 40 years of UCAR/NCAR/UOP accomplishments (focus on the last 15 years), and (2) an editorial published in BAMS and possibly other avenues summarizing this document and the future. The former document will be similar to the 50- page document, "UCAR at 25". We would not do external review on these documents, but the Trustees would review and possibly contribute to them. We will continue to get input on the highlights, including from UOP, and review these at the December meeting. 8. Awareness Document: A first draft has been written that is consistent with the original outline (short, focused on weather/climate as an important national issue, applicable for regional campaign speeches, etc). It is being edited by Lucy Warner and reviewed by David Skaggs. Next draft should be ready in mid-December and reviewed by the President's Council, AMS, and April Burke. 9. Early Retirement: The Council reviewed and approved, with some minor modifications, the new guidelines for early retirement discussed at the October President's Council meeting. The changes clarify certain aspects of the guidelines and expand eligibility to the Associate Vice Presidents and the ATD Facility Managers. 10. 40th Anniversary decisions: a. Honoring 30- and 35-year employees. We agreed to honor all current employees who joined UCAR during the first decade (now 30-year employees) with a plaque with their names on it. This will be announced and the plaque dedicated at the Holiday Awards ceremony on December 10. This would be a single plaque and we would read the names of the honorees. We also agreed to establish a 35-year award and to begin making this award next year along with the 15- and 25-year awards. b. Speaker at 2000 Members' meeting and banquet. We discussed several possibilities for speakers at the October 2000 Annual Members' meeting and banquet. Discussions will continue until suitable choices are found. Council Members are asked to suggest additional names for banquet speakers. We adjourned at 3:00 PM.
