New Job Opening--SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR I - #8267 (RAP)
*SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR I - #8267*
PLEASE NOTE: This is a new, full-time position. Applications for
this position will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on Friday,
January 15, 1999.
NCAR - Research Applications Program (RAP)
Exempt Range 8216
Starting Salary Range $3,028 - $4,542/month
DUTIES INCLUDE: Under direct supervision, assists in the daily
administration of a networked UNIX/NT environment that is configured
to support general scientific analyses and administrative functions.
Helps to ensure the smooth operation of these facilities; assists in
troubleshooting hardware and software problems for users; integrates
computers and peripherals into a networked environment; and assists
with maintenance of local user documentation. The primary function
of this position is to support the LINUX, Solaris 2.x, SunOS, and
IRIX operating systems; the secondary function is to provide backup
support for the Windows NT environment. Performs general systems
administration tasks such as establishing user accounts, mounting
network disks, and maintaining system database files (aliases, hosts,
etc.). Assists with hardware setup and support. Adds and tests
peripherals, moves equipment and troubleshoots problems. Installs
and configures software on the UNIX platforms. Provides helpdesk
services: consults with users regarding problems, seeks out
appropriate solutions, provides new user training, and assists in
writing system and user documentation.
REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:
Education and Experience:
-- B.S. in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or
a physical science OR equivalent combination of education and
experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
-- Knowledge of UNIX commands and file systems
-- Knowledge of UNIX systems administration procedures and
utilities
-- Ability to write scripts in a UNIX administrative language
(perl, sh, csh)
-- Experience working in a networked/distributed computing
environment
-- Knowledge of hardware and software installation procedures
-- Skill in problem solving (troubleshooting)
-- Strong inter-personal and communication skills, including
good telephone and written documentation skills
-- Knowledge of using the WEB for technical support; knowledge
of WEB authoring tools and procedures
-- Ability to physically lift 50 pounds
DESIRED (but not required):
-- 1-2 year's experience in a system administration capacity.
This may include experience gained through student employment and
relevant coursework as an undergraduate.

Update on Boulder Parks/Rec Corporate Annual Pass Fitness Program
The 1999 Corporate Fitness Program is available to NCAR/UCAR
employees once again, beginning Jan. 1, 1999. Membership is valid
for one year from the date of purchase. The current rate is
$361/year, which is a $24 discount off the regular price.
Membership benefits include use of the three Boulder Rec Centers
(including fitness classes), Spruce and Scott Carpenter outdoor pools,
and the Boulder Reservoir. Also, immediate family members may
purchase their passes at half the regular price.
Additional discounts:
10% off one registration class per year per family.
Free fitness tests, weight room orientation, body composition testing,
and blood pressure test.

Services for Lee Fortier are this Monday
Lee Fortier, an employee for 27 years in the former NCAR Graphic
Services department, died unexpectedly on Monday, 21 December, at
age 60. After departing NCAR in 1996, Lee worked as a bus driver for
RTD. He died after suffering a massive heart attack.
Born in Salt Lake City, Lee spent many of his early years in Nebraska.
He was a veteran of the Air Force and served 20 years in the Army
reserves. Lee is survived by his wife, Coreen (Corky), also a former
NCAR employee; one son; three daughters; three grandchildren; and
one great-grandchild
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, 28 December, at
Howe Mortuary, 10203 South Boulder Road, Lafayette. The family
asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Humane
Society of Boulder County or the American Heart Association.

NCAR Library Calendar Available Soon
Watch for the Library's traditional one-page calendar which will
be distributed to all staff again in 1999; we hope to get it back
from the printer and distribute it around the first of the year.

Try this Great Information Resource for NCAR Staff
Have you used Dialog@CARL? Available via the Library Website, it
includes local and national newspapers and Science Magazine (full
text). It also comprises many reference works such as the Thomas
Register and the Foundation Directory. Premier databases that are
a part of this subscription are Mathsci and NTIS. The former
offers access to Current Index to Statistics as well as a vast
quantity of scholarly mathematical literature. NTIS allows access
to the descriptions and identifying report numbers of the
technical reports of government agencies and of organizations such
as NCAR.
All NCAR/UCAR staff may access Dialog@CARL and the other databases
the library has acquired by going to the Library Website
(http://www.dir.ucar.edu/iss/lib/). You will find Dialog@CARL
listed there under Information Resources.

Pilates-The owners' manual for the body
If your haven't tried the mat classes, enjoy your first class free.
Come and join us! Feel free to jump in at any time. No need to wait
until the beginning of a session.
Foothills Lab:

The cost for each session is $36. If your first class is complementary,
deduct $6. Drop-in rates are $7 per class.
Mat classes are non-impact, designed to build strength and flexibility,
with focus on articulating the joints of the body. Working from the
core (abdominal area) can alleviate back strain. We will also address
using the body efficiently and moving with the breath. It's like having
the owners' manual for the body!

'Tis the Season
Each year, during the winter months, air pollution in the Front Range
metro area is at its worst due to a combination of motor vehicle
emissions, wood smoke and airborne dust particles from sanded roads.
Winter weather conditions and temperature inversions make the problem
both more serious and more visible. This has become known as the
"High Pollution Season" . For many, the regular appearance of
the Brown Cloud on the horizon has become an accepted and/or ignored
feature of the scenery.
RideArrangers, a division of the Denver Regional Council of
Governments, is once again promoting the "Pollution Solution", urging
employers to in turn urge employees to commute to work at least one
day a week by using some form of alternative transportation. This
program entails a certain amount of busy-work or overhead for the
participants, and especially for me as UCAR's Employee Transportation
Coordinator. Participants have to fill out and return "Pledge Cards"
and "Commute Calendars". In doing so, they are then eligible for
monthly prize drawings. It's an honorable enough goal, and in the
past UCAR has registered and participated.
Last year, because of the workload involved, i declined participation,
and i'm inclined to do the same again this year. Instead, i'd like to
encourage you to consider where you stand with respect to preserving
our air quality. Are you doing all you can? Are you doing anything
at all? Would you consider trying to do something or doing something
more than you do already? For nearly all of us, there really are
other options to the daily single-occupant-motor-vehicle commute if we
care enough to pursue them. It's generally a matter of choices and
trade-offs.
I'd be glad to share my time or that of other TAP members to help you
find your own solution(s). We can even provide "commute buddies" to
work with you in planning walk/bike/bus routes. Write to TAP at
the address below and also have a look at the useful links from the
TAP web page referenced below.
We may still try to participate with the Pollution Solution at some
level... the statistics collected are very useful to RideArrangers
and other people working on the Brown Cloud problem. Perhaps this
will come in the form of a web-based survey. Stay tuned.

How to Receive Tables of Contents of the Journals You Read
Did you know you can electronically receive the table of contents
for new issues of your favorite journals through the UnCover
system? In order to set up email delivery see the complete
instructions available from the Library Website
(http://www.dir.ucar.edu/iss/lib/). To access the instructions
click on the Services button at the top of the screen and on the
next page click on the button for Journal Table of Contents. If
you have any problems in setting up your profile or selecting
journal titles, please contact the Mesa Library at ext. 1180 or
the Foothills Library at ext. 8505.

Payroll reminder!
Payroll reminds you that W-2 Forms for 1998 will be delivered through
the U.S. Mail again this year. Please be sure that Human Resources has
your correct address. Also, please double check that your name and
Social Security number appear correctly on your personal information.
This is also the time to check your W-4 status for 1999, and make any
necessary updates. Be sure your latest W-4 has all your current
information and that your name agrees with that on your current Social
Security card.
As for 1999 withholding, the Social Security tax rate will remain at
6.2%, with the maximum taxable wage base for Social Security increasing
to $72,600. The Medicare tax rate will remain the same at 1.45%, with
no limit on wages subject to Medicare tax.
