The COMET Program announces a postdoctoral position to support a joint NWS AWIPS Validation and Verification Effort. Duration: 1 year Qualifications: - Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences or related field. - A strong background in synoptic or mesoscale modeling. - An interest in evaluating model algorithms, techniques, and methodologies used in the modernized NWS operational workstation. - Experience in computer programming and use of GEMPAK, NAWIPS, and/or GARP software. Position Description: The Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training (COMET) and the AWIPS Program Office (APO) of the National Weather Service have established an effort to validate fundamental AWIPS diagnostic functionality for model data. The project will test AWIPS model capabilities, evaluate the underlying mathematics for correctness, and document these functions for use in training and reference materials. This project will also produce detailed recommendations regarding specific diagnostic deficiencies and errors uncovered during evaluation that will be sent to the APO for resolution in future AWIPS software releases. To support this effort, a postdoctoral position will be established at the COMET Program. This post-doc will be involved in the test and evaluation activities to establish confidence in and credibility for the AWIPS software. Specific tasks include: - Performing a systematic evaluation of model diagnostics used within AWIPS. - Comparing, identifying, and documenting AWIPS model diagnostic functionality that varies significantly from similar functions in GEMPAK. - Determining the source of significant variations in model diagnostic outputs between the two software systems. - Providing complete documentation of all tests, results, and recommendations including detailed descriptions of any additional AWIPS configuration elements that impact the tests or results. The position is an appointment as a University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) visiting scientist through the COMET Program. The Fellowship salary is at a rate of $36,000.
