Posting announcments to This Week at UCAR
Table of contents for 1998 announcements
Archives of announcements
Note that, as of today, the daily Announcements section of THIS WEEK is now being sent to everyone with a UCAR email address, and is no longer a subscription-only service. Please remember that all non-emergency announcements to the entire staff must now be posted through this publication. They will then be included in a single message to the entire staff each day. The goal of this plan is to reduce the amount of all-staff email by consolidating non-emergency announcements into a single message each morning. For a full discription of the new procedure and instructions on how to use it, please see the web page at: http://www.ucar.edu/communications/thisweek/announcements/guidelines.html For instructions and guidelines for posting emergency email to all staff, please see the web page at: http://www.ucar.edu/communications/thisweek/announcements/emergency.html

The Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training (COMET) OUTREACH PROGRAM 1999 REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS The Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training (COMET) announces its 1999 Outreach Program Request for Proposals (RFP) for Cooperative Projects, which are described below along with the proposal submission requirements. Applications for the smaller COMET Partners Projects are accepted at any time. Information about how to submit a proposal for a Partners Project is available from the Outreach Program Web site at http://www.comet.ucar.edu/outreach/index.htm DESCRIPTION NWS Cooperative Projects promote broad collaborative activities between a university department or program and one or more NWS offices. They frequently involve several faculty members and forecasters and may cover several forecasting topics of interest to the various participants. Alternatively, the focus of the project can be an in-depth study of a single forecast problem. Frequently, the geographical area of interest extends beyond the local area of the forecast office. Cooperative Projects may be one to three years in duration. The NWS is particularly interested in receiving proposals that address their science priorities: o Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) and Forecast (QPF) information, especially as it relates to hydrometeorological (e.g., flash and river flooding) applications o The effect of topography on local weather regimes including the unique weather patterns associated with the Great Lakes and coastal areas o The evolution and movement of tropical cyclones o Conditions conducive for the rapid development of wildfires and the dispersion of smoke and other air quality hazards o Locally hazardous weather, especially severe convection, winter weather, and phenomena that affect aviation The NWS also encourages proposals on how to promote better use of forecasts by the general public and specific user communities. Proposals that involve the use of local domain modeling, Especially those employing the workstation version of the Meso-Eta Model (available at no charge from NCEP) are also encouraged. The Cooperative Projects funded in 1998 had an average award value of about $28,000; however, the COMET Advisory Panel has suggested that the average project award be allowed to rise to about $32,000. Cost effectiveness will be a consideration in the review process. The first drafts of the NWS Cooperative proposals are due to the appropriate NWS region by 15 January 1999, with the final version submitted to the Outreach Program on 15 March 1999. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Interested applicants can access the Outreach Proposal Innstructions from the Outreach Program Web site (http://www.comet.ucar.edu/outreach) or can obtain a hardcopy by contacting: Vickie Johnson, Outreach Program Manager COMET P. Happy New Year? It seems a little early to be talking about New Year's Day, but the holiday will have an impact on UCAR's payroll you need to be aware of. January 1, 1999 falls on Friday, which is our normal payday. Generally, when a holiday coincides with a payday we move up the payday and the checks are sent out early. If this were to be done for this upcoming New Year's, the checks would be issued in 1998 instead of 1999, and this may cause tax problems for UCAR employees. To avoid these tax problems, payroll will be processed with an effective date of January 1, 1999. The electronic funds transfer for employees who have direct deposit will be made effective January 1. But, because the banks are closed, the funds will not be credited to individual employee's accounts until Monday, January 4, 1999. For employees who receive a check, the check will be dated January 1, 1999 and distributed on Monday, January 4th. If you need to have your check prior to January 4th you must notify the payroll department prior to Friday, December 18th. With advance notice, checks will be available for pick up at the FL reception desk on Saturday, January 2cnd between the hours of 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Picture ID will be required to pick up a check and checks will not be given to anyone other than employees, unless UCAR receives prior, written authorization. Since many banks are open on Saturday, the checks may be cashed or deposited that day. You should verify that your bank is open that weekend. Employees who do not pick up their checks on January 2 will receive them on Monday, January 4th. We recognize this may cause a hardship to some employees. Employees with direct deposit may request a paycheck, but this will not get funds into their accounts any sooner. Checks deposited on Saturday, January 2 will be credited to individual accounts on the next working day: Monday, January 4. Before you even ask, checks cannot be handed out prior to January 1,1999 without inflicting the wrath of the IRS (we double-checked to make sure). If any employee has a specific issue that needs individual consideration, please contact Barb Bunting x8856. We'll see if we can work something out to help.

broesch@ucar.edu.

WillMaker Legal Seminars This is an update to the preview WillMaker seminar. There is enough interest at UCAR to hold the WillMaker Seminar on-site. The WillMaker Seminar is a three-hour seminar taught by Attorney, Rebecca Bennetti. In the seminar participants work with the attorney to draft their own wills, develop living wills, financial power of attorney, and organ donation cards. The cost for the three-hour session is $79/person payable at the time of the seminar. The seminar will be open to all UCAR employees, their family members, and UCAR retirees. We will be scheduling evening and Saturday sessions to accomodate as many people as possible. The sessions will be scheduled after the first of year. Another notice will be sent out once dates and times have been confirmed. Registrations will be available at that time. Thank you for your interest.

ON-SITE MAMMOGRAMS and BREAST CANCER EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR BREAST CANCER INFORMATIONAL SEMINAR Thursday, 3, December 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. FL2-Auditorium Everyone is encouraged to attend, those planning to schedule a mammogram are particularly encouraged to attend. Early detection is highlighted in this informative discussion. This session is free of charge and pre-registration is encouraged. ON-SITE MAMMOGRAMS Tuesday, 8, December FL2-1003 A 15-minute time slot is available between -- 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required. The cost for the on-site mammograms is $87 which may be covered by your health insurance provider depending on the plan you carry (please see insurance information below). The mammogram screening is open to all UCAR employees, their spouses and UCAR retirees. With breast cancer affecting one out of every nine women, it is crucial for women to understand the risks of breast cancer and the benefits of early detection. The American Cancer Society recommends that women 30-39 receive a baseline mammogram, women 40-49 have a mammogram every 1-2 years, and women over 50 have a mammogram every year. The UCAR Wellness Advisory Committee is proud to provide an on-site mammography screening program to make obtaining a mammogram as convenient as possible for you or your spouse. If you have had a mammogram in the past, and decide to go ahead with the screening at UCAR, it is requested that you bring your last films with you. How to obtain those films is briefly discussed below. The exams will be performed by a registered technologist with The Mammography Center of Denver. The Mammography Center is certified by the FDA and accredited through the American College of Radiology. The exams will be performed in a private, caring, one-on-one atmosphere. The mammogram is done on a dedicated film-screen mammography unit. Once completed, the films will be taken to The Mammography Center for interpretation by a board certified radiologist. After the examination, the analysis is performed rapidly. Your primary care physician will receive the results promptly, evaluate the information, and advise you accordingly. The Mammography Center does not offer any diagnosis, this is a screening process only. Women who have had previous mammograms with positive results are encouraged to continue working with their current physician and not to attend this screening through The Mammography Center. Breast cancer is a disease of change which is why the current mammogram is compared with your last, or most recent exam. The radiologist will compare breast anatomy from your last exam to detect subtle interval changes which may have occurred. If you have had a mammogram before, you need to bring your most current films with you on the day of the screening. Or if you prefer, your previous provider may mail the films to: The Mammography Center, 155 Cook Street, Suite 100, Denver, Colorado 80206, (303) 333-6375. A comparison analysis will be completed and your old films will be returned to the previous provider of service. If your last mammogram was performed by The Mammography Center, please contact Lynn Wright at the Mammography Center, 761-7772 for further information. Please be assured that confidentiality will be maintained. HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION OPTION I (PacifiCare EPO) - If you are over age 35 and have not had a mammogram in the past year, the cost will be covered 100%. Participants should notify their primary care provider so they are aware you will be having the mammogram screening. If you are under age 35, please consult your primary care physician. PacifiCare may cover mammograms for those under age 35 based on family history. The Mammography Center will send the billing information to PacifiCare and the results to your primary care physician. OPTION II (PacifiCare PPO/Indemnity) - A $10 co-payment will be collected at the time of your screening. Cash or checks will be accepted. The Mammography Center will send the billing information to PacifiCare and your results to your current care physician. OPTION IV (Kaiser HMO) - Because Kaiser has the proper equipment to perform mammograms within its own facilities, Kaiser will NOT cover services rendered by any other providers. Early detection could save your or a loved one's life.
