Announcements for UCAR Staff
Staff development news and upcoming classes
Please bookmark this address for easier access.
There have been a few calls regarding some difficulty in accessing the
Staff Development Catalog on-line. If you have some difficulty, here
are a few ideas that might help. If you continue to have problems,
please contact Regna Meenk ext. 8881, rmeenk@ucar.edu.
* Most errors have been URL or address errors. Please check and double
check and triple check the URL. Remember the URL is case-sensitive, and
that extra spaces before or in the address, and/or extra punctuation
(like a period at the end), need to be removed. It should begin with
http:// and it should not have a period or any other punctuation at the
end. Also, copy it carefully to avoid leaving part of it out.
* The second most common error has been caused by the server receiving
multiple simultaneous hits for the same page. Keep trying: you will be
able to get through at some point.
* Hit the "refresh" or "reload" button on your browser. This may bring
up the page, especially if you are in Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 and
receive a "forbidden" error after you registered for a class.

Library staff will be unable to access Zap during the closure period;
however you can continue to place interlibrary loan orders there for us
to access after October 6th. Alternatively call us, send your orders
by regular mail, or e-mail them to ncarill@ucar.edu.
FL library services will operate as usual during the ML library site
rewire. For more information, contact Gayl Gray at ext. 1180
(gayl@ucar.edu).
Service outages October 4th
Facilities Support Services will be conducting the Fall semi-annual
shutdown of utility services on Saturday, October 4. The shutdown is
scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. and continue until approximately 8:00
p.m. that evening.
All Mesa Lab and Fleischmann Building occupants can expect intermittent
electrical power interruptions throughout the day. All heating and air
conditioning systems will be out of service during scheduled shutdown
hours. Due to repairs of the main water supply to the ML site, there
will be no water to the building during scheduled shutdown hours.
Water main repairs will also require that the Mesa Lab hill road be
reduced to one lane for a distance of approximately 100 yards with
occasional short periods of road closures. Portable toilets will be
made available for those employees who may be on site during the
shutdown. These will be located by the B-Tower, 2-B level, handicapped
entrance near shipping. For safety reasons, the Mesa Lab will be
closed to public access during the scheduled shutdown hours.
The SCD Networking and Facilities Telecommunications sections will use
this opportunity to perform some major work at Foothills Lab. ALL
networks and phones will be down at FL1, FL2, FL3, FL4, and UV between
8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Tha Mesa Lab telephone system will be down for approximately an hour at
6:30 a.m.
SCD will be installing a new Cisco 5500 Ethernet Switch, testing the
computer room Emergency Power Off (EPO) system, and powering down
equipment for cleaning following the FL2 3095 Computer Room
construction project.
The ML Networks, Commodity MCI Internet Connection, and vBNS should not
be affected.
Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in informing those in
your division of the scheduled down time. If you have any questions,
please contact :

STORM CHASING EXTRAVAGANZA!
The time for the annual storm chaser's meeting is here! We have five
presenters lined up to share exciting footage from this past summer's
storm season. Chances are looking good that we will even have some
awesome footage of the Jarrell, Texas tornado. There will also be some
special still photography examples including comets and noctilucent
clouds! We'll try to leave a little time at the end of the program for
others to share a few favorite slides or video segments. Last year
nearly one hundred people attended this meeting so come early to visit
and get a good seat.
If you wish to present at this meeting, you NEED to contact former
chapter president Randy Collander with your A/V needs by Oct. 6th at
497-5960 or collande@fsl.noaa.gov.
NOVEMBER Meeting: On Wednesday November 5th, Colonel Jack Hayes, the
Commander of the Air Force Global Weather Central and Fellow of the AMS
will give a presentation to our chapter on the exciting work going on
within the Air Force regarding the operational use of mesoscale models.
We are going to try our first dinner meeting in recent history. The
meeting will actually be held at Casa Alvarez restaurant in the
shopping center at 30th and Walnut in Boulder. We will gather for
dinner before the business meeting and evening program. Stay tuned for
the details!

Free flu shots
Sponsored by the UCAR Wellness Advisory Committee
The flu season is quickly approaching. Influenza shots will again be
available to UCAR staff, their immediate families (spouse and children
18 and older) and retirees. The shots will be administered by the
Longmont Clinic. No pre-registration is required.
The sessions are scheduled for:
14 October 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. JEFFCO
21 October 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. FL2-1003
21 October 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. ML-Damon Room
The flu season extends from November to April. So by having the shot
now, the vaccine will last throughout the entire flu season. People
who should NOT take the flu shot include those who are currently ill,
pregnant, or have a history of being allergic to eggs, chicken or
chicken feathers. In addition, people taking antibiotics or having an
infection should not take the flu vaccine.
If you have any questions on whether this vaccine is appropriate for
you, please consult your physician.
For further information, please contact Cheryl Cristanelli, ext. 8708
or email cherylc@ucar.edu.
