Retirement party!!!!

SCD will be hosting a retirement party on September 26, 1997, for Ken
Hansen, Bob Lackman, Rosemary Mitchell, Gene Schumacher, and Suzy
Schemel.

TIME: 3:00 - 4:30p.m.
Where: Mesa Lab, Damon Room

All are welcome to join us for "food and refreshments" while we
celebrate their many years of service to NCAR.

Staff development news and upcoming classes

The 1997-98 Staff Development Catalog is on-line. To access and to
register for this year's exciting array of classes the web address is:

Please bookmark this address for easier access.

There have been a few calls regarding some difficulty in accessing the
Staff Development Catalog on-line. If you have some difficulty, here
are a few ideas that might help. If you continue to have problems,
please contact Regna Meenk ext. 8881, rmeenk@ucar.edu.

* Most errors have been URL or address errors. Please check and double
check and triple check the URL. Remember the URL is case-sensitive, and
that extra spaces before or in the address, and/or extra punctuation
(like a period at the end), need to be removed. It should begin with
http:// and it should not have a period or any other punctuation at the
end. Also, copy it carefully to avoid leaving part of it out.

* The second most common error has been caused by the server receiving
multiple simultaneous hits for the same page. Keep trying: you will be
able to get through at some point.

* Hit the "refresh" or "reload" button on your browser. This may bring
up the page, especially if you are in Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 and
receive a "forbidden" error after you registered for a class.

Cellular phone fair - EAC discount

---

The last chance to get the NO MONTHLY FEE rate plan will be October
15th, therefore the Employee Activities Committee will sponser a phone
fair Monday October 13th at the Mesa lab and October 14th at the
Foothills lab. Both fairs will be held from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm and
will be located in the cafeterias.

Again, there is no monthly fee and the airtime charges are:
$0.22/minute peak time (6:00 am to 8:00 pm M-F)
$0.17/minute off-peak time

Any UCAR/NCAR/UOP staff member (or family of) who signed up under a
previous UCAR/NCAR/UOP U S WEST plan may change over to this new plan.

This plan requires signing a 12-MONTH lease agreement.

All UCAR/NCAR/UOP staff and their families are eligible, however, upon
termination (voluntary/invol.) you will be requested to move your
account(s) from NCAR/UCAR Cellular Program and all accounts will be
temporarily suspended until appropriate changes can be made.

Once again there will be discounted phones available for purchase with
this plan. Prices start at $69. For details of the phones available,

You may also supply your own phone for this rate.

The regular $40 activation fee will be waived at the phone fair!

ML Library site closure during MLNAC rewiring

---

The MLNAC rewiring for the Library will take place from Monday
September 29 through Monday October 6. Users will not be able to come
into the Mesa Library during that time. If you know you'll be needing
materials or services from the ML Library during that period, please
plan to stop by prior to it. If you wish to return books to the ML
Library, please do so before September 26th or after October 6th.

As you discover you need ML Libary services and materials during the
closure period, please call either ext. 1183 or ext. 8505. Library
staff will be present at both the Mesa and Foothills labs and will be
able to supply your needs although you can't physically visit the ML
library location.

You will continue to be able to do your own literature and library
catalog searches via our Website at:

Library staff will be unable to access Zap during the closure period;
however you can continue to place interlibrary loan orders there for us
to access after October 6th. Alternatively call us, send your orders
by regular mail, or e-mail them to ncarill@ucar.edu.

FL library services will operate as usual during the ML library site

In the Galleries

---

Nederland watercolorist Virginia Schick will present her one-woman show
in Gallery I (second floor) of the ML from 3 to 22 October.
"Waterpeople" highlights Schick's recent work which captures the human
form with vivid color, pattern, and rhythm.

Sculptures by Boulder artist McArthur Johnson will be on exhibit in
Gallery II (cafeteria) from 2 October through 29 November. The show
features the artist's large-format, contemporary, multicultural, wooden
assemblages.

Schick and Johnson's works and future NCAR art exhibitions can be

Shuttle schedule and route to change 6 October

---

In an effort to better serve U.S. 36 commuters, Traffic Services is
revising the crosstown shuttle route that runs between the Mesa and
Foothills Labs during rush hours and midday. Instead of going
southbound from Crossroads past downtown and the University of Colorado
to Table Mesa and Broadway (and vice versa for northbound travel), the
new route will go from Crossroads directly to the Table Mesa
Park-n-Ride at Foothills Parkway, then to the current TM/Broadway
shuttle stop (and vice versa). The express routes at mid-morning and
mid-afternoon will continue as before. However, the departure times
have changed from 3 and 33 minutes after the hour to 5 and 35 minutes
after the hour. The revised schedule takes effect on Monday, 6
October.

New schedules will be available 10/1/97 at the ML and FL reception
desks, or on the shuttles. The schedule can be previewed on the Web
