Announcing the 1997-98 Staff Development Catalog of Classes

The 1997-98 Staff Development Catalog of Classes is now available
on-line. This year's catalog is offering over 40 exciting workshops in
a variety of areas: Communication, Computer Skills, Professional
Development and Supervisory/Management Skills.

This year the catalog will be accessible on-line (copies will not be
sent to every employee) although hard copies will be available with
division administrators, libraries, Training Resources displays near
the cafeterias and the Human Resources office.

Retirement party!!!!

SCD will be hosting a retirement party on September 26, 1997, for Ken
Hansen, Bob Lackman, Rosemary Mitchell, and Gene Schumacher.

TIME: 3:00 - 4:30p.m.
Where: Mesa Lab, Damon Room

All are welcome to join us for "food and refreshments" while we
celebrate their many years of service to NCAR.

1) LOW USE OPTION:
   $9.95 per month
   15 minutes free peak time
   30 minutes free off-peak time
   additional time billed at $0.30 per minute peak
      and $0.20 per minute off-peak
   (airtime is billed in 1 minute increments)

These calling plans are available to current employees of government
entities. Former employees, retirees, temporary and volunteer
employees are excluded from this offer. However, the same price was
offered to the general public via a television advertisement, so it
would pay to talk to the Airtouch representative if you fall in this
category.

To obtain service, employees must satisfy Airtouch Cellular credit
criteria. Employees will be held solely responsible for all charges
due for services.

To get the NO MONTHLY FEE Government rate, print the order form, fill
it out, and fax it to Airtouch at 303-727-4466. The order form is

FYI: AT&T Wireless Services will continue to offer the no monthly fee
rate plan to government employees. Bills must be received at your work
address, but the rates are as follows:

No monthly service fee
Airtime billed at:
   $0.21 per minute peak and off-peak for Analog
   $0.19 per minute peak for digital
   $0.15 per minute off-peak for digital
(airtime is billed in 1 minute increments)

discounted phones are available. Activation fee is unknown.  If you are

a current AT&T Wireless customer, switching accounts is free.

FL parking lot tree "upgrade" plan for FL1, 2,and 3

The trees in the parking lots at Foothills Lab are aging and need to be
replaced with different varieties. We have had considerable damage to
many of them starting several years ago with the fall storm. In
addition to this damage, the trees are shallow rooted and are putting
roots up into the parking lot trying to find water. This, of course,
is damaging the asphalt. When the asphalt gets holes in it, the water
gets in and the holes get bigger and bigger. There are several
sections where the damage is quite extensive. This also makes a
problem in the winter for the snow plows.

To fix this problem we have decided to replace the trees in a two year
program. Half the trees will be removed this fall and half will be
replaced a year from now. In the spring when it is the best time for
tree transplant survival, we will replace the trees with winter hardy,
deep rooted trees (better suited to arid conditions since there is no
water in the islands.) We are planning to use a mixture of evergreens
and other hardy varieties recommended for our conditions.

After all the trees have been replaced, we will resurface the parking
lot.

The Architectural Standards Committee reviewed the plan as well at the
Foothills Lab Campus Coordinating Committee. We feel this two year
plan will work the best.

If you are interested in the details, a site plan with the areas
affected this year will be posted on the bulletin board next to the FL
cafeteria this week. While the work is being done, a schedule of what
part of the parking lot is affected will be posted on the exterior

Some of you will be glad that the parking lot will be repaired and some
of you will miss the mature trees. Either way, we thank you for your
understanding and cooperation during this "tree upgrade" project.

Satellite meetings and seminars

NCAR/RAP will be hosting the 7th Annual International TeraScan User's
Conference from September 23-25, 1997 (Tuesday through Thursday), at
Foothills Laboratory. This meeting is an informal series of seminars
and discussion sessions relating to the acquisition and use of
satellite data for atmospheric and oceanographic applications.
UCAR/NCAR staff and visitors are invited to participate in any of the
Conference sessions. For detailed information about the meeting
schedule, contact David Johnson, RAP (497-8370, djohnson@ucar.edu).

As part of the TeraScan User's Conference, two public keynote addresses
will be presented. At 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, 25 September, Dr. Stanley
Kidder from CIRA (Colorado State University) will present an address
entitled: "MORE! The Future of Satellite Meteorology." At 10:30
a.m., following a break, Dr. James Frew from the Institute for
Computational Earth System Science at the University of California at
Santa Barbara (UCSB) will present an address entitled: "Antennas on
the Net: Plugging Satellite Ground Stations into an Earth Science
Information Infrastructure." Both keynote addresses will be given in
the main Foothills Laboratory Seminar Room (Building 2, Room 1022).

Elephant appreciation day!

Monday, September 22, is ELEPHANT APPRECIATION DAY (really!). We would
like to give you a BIG THANKS, in advance, for bringing back knives,
forks, and spoons, soup bowls, plates, cups, salad bowls, glasses,
trays or anything else that might call one of the NCAR cafeterias
home.

Just to show our appreciation (and to make up for all those Fridays
when you were only l/8 ounce off), we are also offering complimentary
frozen yogurt on Monday.

Our dish supplies are really low and replacement costs are high. So
just like an elephant which is supposed to have a remarkable memory,
please remember to march on down to the cafeterias on Monday, September
22 with all those dishes, glasses, etc. before they become permanent
office fixtures. And enjoy some yogurt!!!
