Announcing the 1997-98 Staff Development Catalog of Classes

---

The 1997-98 Staff Development Catalog of Classes is now available
on-line. This year's catalog is offering over 40 exciting workshops in
a variety of areas: Communication, Computer Skills, Professional
Development and Supervisory/Management Skills.

This year the catalog will be accessible on-line (copies will not be
sent to every employee) although hard copies will be available with
division administrators, libraries, Training Resources displays near
the cafeterias and the Human Resources office.

Youth tutoring in science and math

---

This fall opens a new academic year for the Youth Competency in Math &
Science (YCMS) tutoring program sponsored by the Colorado Alliance for
Science. Each year over 100 people from UCAR/NCAR/UOP and other local
scientific organizations spend a few hours each week in a Boulder
County school for individual or small-group tutoring in science or
math. Participating schools this year are Pioneer Elementary
(Lafayette), Spangler Elementary (Longmont), Casey Middle (Boulder),
Heritage Middle (Longmont), Centaurus Senior High (Lafayette), and
Skyline Senior High (Longmont). YCMS fills requests from other schools
as well. Volunteers need not have a science degree.

Up the Hill Races are tomorrow!

---

The 18th annual Up-the-Hill races will be held on Friday, September 12,
on the Mesa Lab road. The schedule is as follows:



Bike Race   3:00 - 3:30
Foot Race   3:30 - 4:00
Relay Race  4:00 - 4:30

The road will be closed approximately 5 minutes before each race. The
shuttle schedule will be adjusted, and email sent out with the
schedule.

Food and beverages will be served on the tree plaza (or in the
cafeteria, in case of inclement weather) at the conclusion of the relay
race. Awards will be announced at approximately 5:15. EAC T-shirts
will also be for sale.

REMINDER ON SAFETY: Do not stand on the pavement anywhere along the
race course. Keep clear of the area around and after the finish line -
particularly down past the Fleischman Building at the end of the bike
race.

Retirement party!!!!

SCD will be hosting a retirement party on September 26, 1997, for Ken
Hansen, Bob Lackman, Rosemary Mitchell, and Gene Schumacher.

TIME: 3:00 - 4:30p.m.
Where: Mesa Lab, Damon Room

All are welcome to join us for "food and refreshments" while we
celebrate their many years of service to NCAR.
