Paste the text | | of your announcement into the body of your email message, rather | | than appended as an attachment or enclosure. | |_____________________________________________________________________| ************************************************************************ ESIG/ASP ENSO COLLOQIUM IS 20 JULY-1 AUGUST ESIG is organizing this summer's ASP Colloquium, "A Systems approach to El Nino-Southern Oscillation: Atmospheric, Oceanic, Societal, Environmental, and Policy Perspectives," from 20 July to 1 August in the Main Seminar Room of the Mesa Lab. The colloquium will be attended by 40 participants (predoctoral candidates to postdocs) and about 20 lecturers. Extended abstracts of the presentations at the colloquium will be put on the Internet in English and Spanish in near real-time. CATHALAC, a Panamanean Research Center (UCAR affiliated) will be translating the abstracts into Spanish. There will be an e-mail capability for people to send questions to the colloquium presenters and participants. All presentations are open to staff based on space availability. The two-week schedule can be found on the Web at the colloquium home page, http://www.dir.ucar.edu/esig/enso For more information, please contact Mickey Glantz (x8119), Djan Stewart (x8117) or Barb Hansford (x1601). ************************************************************************ FOOTHILLS BLOOD DRIVE COMING UP The Bonfils Blood Center mobile will be visiting the Foothills Lab on Wednesday, July 30, 1997. The blood drive will be located in building number 2, room 1003 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The mobile will be closed between 12:00 p.m. until 12:30 p.m. Blood Donation Essentials: Age: At least 18 years of age Weight: Minimum of 110 pounds Frequency: Eight weeks (56 days) since last donation Do not fast before donating. Do not skip any meals before donating. Eat a healthy, low-fat meal before you donate. Drink extra fluids (water is best), before and after your donation. Limit your intake of caffeine. Each year, Bonfils Blood Center provides a listing of medical criteria to serve as a general guideline for assessing blood donor eligibility. Following are two criteria that have changed within the past year: Diabetes: Donor is eligible to donate if diabetes is controlled by diet or oral medication. Insulin-dependent diabetics may be acceptable, if free from infection, with permission of personal medical physician. Malaria: Donor is deferred 12 months after leaving malarial-endemic area (regardless of medications taken), if symptom-free. Donors who have been diagnosed with malaria are eligible 3 years after becoming symptom-free. Donor is eligible if traveled to a non-malarial area or to parts of malarial-endemic countries that are considered risk-free. AL TEICH, DIRECTOR OF AAAS Tuesday, July 22, 4:00 p.m. FL2 Room 1001 Dr. Albert H. Teich has been the Director of Science and Policy Programs at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Washington since 1990. He is responsible for the Associations activities in science and technology policy (including the AAAS R&D Budget and Policy Program, the Congressional Science and Engineering Fellows Program, and a new Research Competitiveness Program). Prior to joining AAAS, Dr. Teich served on the faculty and in research and administration positions at George Washington University, the State University of New York, and Syracuse University. He holds a B.S. in physics and a Ph.D. in political science, both from M.I.T. Dr. Teichs presentation on budget and policy issues on the Hill will be followed by audience Q&A.
