FACILITY FOR PREPARING AND DEPLOYING SOUNDING DEVICES Inventors: Dean K. Lauritsen, Sigvard J. Stenlund Patent Number: 5,636,480 Date Issued: June 10, 1997 ABSTRACT: The facility for preparing and deploying atmospheric sounding devices of the present invention, makes use of structure with a retractable cover and a wind deflecting member circumscribing the shelter, to provide a transportable, reliable, and cost effective facility to prepare and deploy lighter-than-air balloons as the vehicle for carrying sounding devices. The facility permits preparation and deployment in any weather condition including, but not limited to, light to heavy winds that would otherwise cause down drafts through the roof opening in the structure. Now that the warm summer months are here, many of us are dusting off our athletic gear to try it again. The Wellness Advisory Committee (WAC) wants to remind UCAR employees about the fitness classes at the ML and FL. At both locations classes are offered in the Repatterning Technique, Yoga, and Aerobics at noon and evenings. For a complete schedule of these classes and additional information, check out the WAC web pages at http://www.ucar.edu//ucargen/groups/wellness/wellness.html Enjoy the warm weather and commit to be fit! Yoga offers a refreshing break in the day. It increases flexibility, helps relieve back pain, repetitive stress syndrome and reduces anxiety. Renewed energy arises from precise attention to alignment and continuous flow of yoga postures. The class is both gentle and rigorous. Katharine Kaufman M.F.A., has recently returned to N.C.A.R. from South India where she studied Ashtanga Yoga with Pattahbi Jois and Dr. Shankaranarayana Jois. Katharine can be reached at 444-8239. Drop Ins with instructor's permission: $10.00 For more information about yoga at FL, contact: Leonard Sitongia (sitongia@ucar.edu, ext.1509). At the Bolder Boulder this year, NCAR placed 3 teams in the top 8 (out of 39) in the Corporate Division A competition (more than 500 employees). The NCAR Stormchasers won the overall title for the second year in a row with a combined time of 3 hours, 47 minutes and 32 seconds. Team members were Dave Albo (RAP), Barbara Bailey (CGD), Andrew Crook (MMM/RAP), Dave Dempsey (MMM), Rick Katz (ESIG), Leslie Mayer (ACD), Arthur Mizzi (MMM) and Stan Trier (MMM). In order to 'three-peat' next year, the Stormchasers, who will soon lose a couple of team members, will probably need to find some new blood or else try some new training methods. The NCAR Z-team, consisting of Tim Barnes (DIR), Karsten Baumann (ASP/ACD), Jean-Francois Lamarque (ACD), Julia Lee-Taylor (ASP/ACD), Pieternel Levelt (ACD), Elizabeth (CGD) and James (ACD) Sulzman and Wendy Welch (ASP/CGD) finished 5th in 4:18:01. This was achieved by having a perfect balance of women and men as the 6 best finishers of the team. The Foothills Flyers, consisting of Nolan Atkins (MMM), Janice Coen (MMM), Chris Davis (MMM/RAP), Jimy Dudhia (MMM), Joe Klemp (MMM), Kay Miloshevich (COMET), Bill Skamarock (MMM), and Morris Weisman (MMM), finished a record high 8th place for a Foothills Lab team with a team time of 4:28:25. This was two positions better than in 1996, despite being over 9 minutes slower. All finishing times can be found on the Daily Camera's Web site at: http://www.bouldernews.com/bolder/index.htm For more information, contact Andrew Crook 497-8980, crook@ucar.edu ************************************************************************ UCAR NORTH RENAMED Following UCAR's purchase of 3300 Mitchell Lane, the name of the building has been changed from UCAR North to Foothills Lab 4. Staff should use this designation effective immediately. ************************************************************************ NEW BOOKS FOR THE UPCOMING WEEK This is a sampling of the new books available at the NCAR library.
