We need to know how many people would be interested, as we need at least a group of 10 to get a discount. In July and August the operas available are: Giacomo Puccini's MADAME BUTTERFLY (July 19 and August 1 at 8:00 pm) The gentle butterfly's gossamer wings are caught and imprisoned by the easy cruelty of Pinkerton, her lover. The most poignant portrait of art and melody captures love's faithfulness for all time. Carlisle Floyd's SUSANNAH (July 12,26, and August 8 at 8:00 pm) The Joy and beauty of Susannah provoke fear and hypocrisy in her rural Tennessee valley. Based on the Biblical story of Susannah and the Elders, SUSANNAH paints the beauty innocence and darkness of ignorance in this American opera which sings with traditional hymns, square dance music and Appalachian ballads. Franz Lehar's THE MERRY WIDOW (July 5, 11, and August 2 at 8:00 pm) A confident and glamorous beauty plays the game of love with savoir faire. But the handsome Danilo proves a worthy foil for this most desirable of widows. Set in beautiful Paris, THE MERRY WIDOW glows with vibrant colors as it waltzes its way through the Parisian beau monde. Ticket prices will be: Section A Section B Section C Fri. $41 $33 $22 Sat. $47 $38 $25 Matinees are also available, so let me know if a matinee would be more to your liking. So, if you are interested in one of these performances, send Lana Soller email at lana@ucar.edu, listing the opera and night of interest. The seating section does not matter as we can mix and match. If we get 10 people for one performance, then we can get the discount prices for any number of people for other performances. Please no phone calls, email only. ************************************************************************ HEALTHY COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE HOLDS PUBLIC FORUM The Boulder County Healthy Communities Initiative (BCHCI) of UCAR's Walter Orr Roberts Institute, will be holding a public forum Thursday, May 29th, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Westview Middle School (1591 Airport Road) in Longmont. Issues of interest to the BCHCI include education, the arts, affordable housing, environmental quality, the economy, neighborhoods, regional governance, and civility. The purpose of this forum is to provide citizens with a "report card," an update on how well Boulder County is doing in building a healthy and sustainable future for the region. For more information, call Susan Foster, ext. 2108 or susanf@ucar.edu. ************************************************************************ NEW BOOKS FOR THE UPCOMING WEEK This is a sampling of the new books available at the NCAR library.
