The community mentor's job is to help a student with a smooth transition to UCAR and the Boulder community. It is not a time-consuming or demanding job. An orientation session and mentoring workshop will be offered. Past years' community mentors had a very positive experience and most have agreed to serve again this year. Our need for additional mentors comes from having received additional funding to support new students. If interested, please contact Bev Johnson: (Ext. 8623); e-mail address: beverlyj@ucar.edu ************************************************************************ SOARS MENTOR ORIENTATION The SOARS Program is sponsoring an orientation and mentor work session for UCAR/NCAR/UOP staff serving as mentors to this year SOARS proteges. Four sessions are scheduled, and all staff are welcome to attend. Each session will be conducted by Tom Windham, SOARS Program Manager. The work sessions will provide a program overview and address strategies for: --developing and sustaining productive mentoring relationships; --increasing understanding and confidence as a mentor; and --developing tools for early detection of problems and strategies for solving them. This orientation and work session is being offered on four separate dates: May 13 Tuesday 1-4 p.m. Damon Room at Mesa Lab May 14 Wednesday 8:30-11:30 a.m. Room 2133 at Foothills Lab-1 May 20 Tuesday 1-4 p.m. Room 2133 at Foothills Lab-1 May 21 Wednesday 8:30-11:30 a.m. Main Seminar Room at Mesa Lab To register, contact Bev Johnson at Ext. 8623 or E-Mail Bev at beverlyj@ucar.edu. Please provide the following information: your name, phone number; e-mail address, and indicate if you are serving as a scientific mentor, writing mentor or community mentor. Thanks for your participation. ************************************************************************ CELLULAR PHONE FAIR - EAC DISCOUNT The Employee Activities Committee has once again lined up an agreement with Airtouch Cellular to offer cellular phone service to UCAR/NCAR/UOP staff at bargain rates. The 54 projects on view, created by 87 students altogether, were submitted from 12 high schools around the state. Students may enter one of two categories: computational science, where students use computers to solve science problems, or information technology, such as applications for the World Wide Web. After viewing the projects from 9:40 a.m. to noon, visitors may enjoy a box lunch for sale in the NCAR cafeteria , followed the awards ceremony from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Keynote speaker Gary Johnson, a professor of Computer Science at George Mason University, will discuss "Disaster Modeling and Mitigation: A New Direction for Computational Science." In addition, CSU graduate students Kumi Suzuki and Angela Earnhart will talk about "Two- Phase Groundwater Flow" and "Visualization of the Multigrid Method" and show videos of their work. For more information on the 1997 Colorado Computational Science Fair, contact Becky Ruttenberg, ext. 1598, becky@ucar.edu or check the World Wide Web at http://www.scd.ucar.edu/ois/ccsf ************************************************************************ EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED! FIRE DRILLS PLANNED FOR ML, FB, UN AND FL Fire drills will be held at: ML and FB Tues, May 13 in the morning UN Wed, May 14 in the afternoon FL Thurs, May 29, in the morning Monitored fire drills are necessary for identifying problems with the warning system as well as for familiarizing people with the proper evacuation procedures. Common sense should be your general guide for responding to fire alarms, but please follow these safety rules: --Even though this is a drill, treat it as if it were a real emergency. All employees MUST evacuate the building when the alarm sounds. --Close your office door as you leave (to help contain or limit fire and smoke). --Use the stairs, not elevators (which could become disabled in a fire). --Help others in need when evacuating the building. --Evacuate to the outer edges of the parking lot (to leave room for emergency vehicles and personnel, as well as to remove yourself from the dangers of falling objects or breaking glass). At ML, do not congregate on the ramp or tree plaza--a fire could be raging underneath! At FL, do not congregate between the buildings or in the driveways close to the buildings. Following these safety rules will result in a quick, efficient, and safe evacuation of the building. The entire drill should not take more than half an hour. Please wait for an "all-clear" from a designated authority, such as fire fighter or Safety Committee representative, before re-entering the building. While you are thinking about it, take the time to locate the nearest fire extinguisher and fire alarm to your office or lab, and review your options for leaving the building. Thank you for your participation and cooperation. Questions? Contact your division safety representative or Ginger Hein, ext. 8555, hein@galaxy.ucar.edu ************************************************************************ NEW BOOKS FOR THE UPCOMING WEEK This is a sampling of the new books available at the NCAR library.
