The Boulder County Healthy Communities Initiative, whose office is based at UCAR, has been soliciting suggestions to answer this question. Their findings will be presented at a countywide public forum to help participants build skills in bringing about and sustaining constructive community dialogues. The forum will be held Thursday, 13 March, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Westview Middle School, 1651 Airport Road, Longmont (just southwest of the intersection of Hygiene and Airport roads). It is open to all. Participants are asked to bring a snack to share with others during the break. For more details, contact Susan Foster, ext. 2108, susanf@ucar.edu. ************************************************************************ SUPER SCIENCE SATURDAY 1 March 1997 NCAR Mesa Lab 9 a.m.-3 p.m. SCIENCE PRESENTATIONS (Main Seminar Room) 9:15-10:30 Snow/Avalanches Richard Armstrong, CU-CIRES 10:45-12:00 Severe Storms Greg Thompson, NCAR MMM 1:00-2:00 Wonderful Weather Websites: A Web Tour SCIENCE DEMOS (Classroom) 10:00, 11:00, Tim Barnes, ETP 1:00, & 2:00 ACTIVITIES (Mezzanine) Collage Children's Museum: Bubbles/Zometools/Facepainting Butterfly Pavilion & Insect Center: Butterflies CU-Science Discovery WORKSHOPS (12:30-3:00, Pre-Registration Required) Photography Carlye Calvin, IDC Visualizing with Computer Graphics Carter Emmart, CGD Clay Printing Karen Schuster Science Demo Emily Weller Design ************************************************************************ MARCH AND APRIL DENVER-BOULDER AMS MEETINGS DATE: Wednesday, March 12th TIME: 7:00 PM Refreshments 7:30 PM Program PLACE: Radian International Corporation Doppler Radar Lower Atmospheric Wind Profiling Gene Pfeffer Over the last 20 years, many advances have been made in the development and application of operational wind profilers. In 1991, Radian Electronics Division and Senoma Technology, Inc. entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with NOAA to commercialize the NOAA-developed lower atmospheric wind profiler. Radian now manufactures and fields wind profilers in the VHF and UHF range which provide vertical profiles of horizontal wind speed and direction, and vertical velocity reliably to ranges of 3 to 16 km depending on design. When a Radio Acoustic Sounding System (RASS) option is added, virtual temperature profiles can be obtained up to about 2 km depending on atmospheric conditions. This presentation will review the basics of profiling and profiler design, review the various weather analysis and forecasting applications of wind profilers, and demonstrate a typical Radian profiler system in operation. Directions to Radian: from Foothills Hwy, proceed north to Valmont Road in north Boulder. Go east to Airport Road and then turn north on Airport Road to the end. They are the first building on the right in the industrial park on the end. Address: 5600 Airport Blvd. April Meeting: Our APRIL MEETING will be a tour of Coors Field on Saturday the 5th at 3 pm (two days before the season home opener)! The tour will include the scoop on how they get their weather information as well as seeing parts of the ballpark the public doesn't get to see on game day. The cost is $3 per person and is open to any interested persons, but we must have both an RSVP and the cash by March 24th. You may sign up for the tour either at the March Meeting, or by emailing chapter vice-president Rick Graw at rickgraw@ecentral.com, or by phoning him at 972-4511. We Need Volunteers for two of next year's officer positions: Ralph Anderson and Rick Graw are going to continue on as officers for the 1997-1998 AMS campaign pending membership approval. Randy Collander and Wendy Abshire are going to retire. We need anyone interested in volunteering to serve as an officer next year or to help chapter officers in other capacities to contact us ASAP. We will have chapter elections at our banquet in May. In order to keep our ties to the NOAA and NCAR communities and their facilities strong, it would be especially helpful if persons from these communities would volunteer for potential service as chapter officers next year. Please let us know if you are interested at a meeting, by emailing all of us at dbamsoff@comet.ucar.edu or you can check our web page for other ways to contact us individually. Science Fair Judge Alert: Each year the Boulder Valley and the Denver Metro Regional Science Fairs look for scientist volunteers to serve in the general judging. It is a stimulating experience to interact with the young people who have worked hard on their projects. Categories which our members could help out with are Earth and Environmental Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Science. Responses to our Chapter questionnaire of last August indicated many of you had an interest in this activity. The Boulder Valley Regional Fair To volunteer contact: March 7th 5-9 pm Cheryl Rapp, BVSD Coordinator Broomfield Middle School 447-5087 rapp@bsvd.k12.co.us The Denver Metro Regional Fair To volunteer contact: March 10th, 5:30- 10:00 pm Dr Herschel Newmann, 871-2238 University of Denver Dept of Physics and Astronomy Judges that will judge on behalf of our chapter in order to choose the AMS awards will be Bill Bonner, Will Kellogg, Dan Birkenheuer and Ralph Anderson. See our Web Page: Look to http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/stats/ams/dbams.html. The web page has information on upcoming meetings, how to reach the chapter officers, and dues. They have provided us with an on-site engineer, housed at the ML. They have proven to be very reliable and so far there have been no complaints about their service. Grumman can repair and get parts for your PCs and Apples. If you are interested in maintenance coverage for your PCs and Apples, send e-mail to fukuhara@ucar.edu listing the following for each: 1. Model Number 2. Serial Number 3. Size of Hard Drive 4. RAM 5. Is there an internal modem? If so, list the speed. After we get an estimate of volume, we will then be able to provide you with pricing information. Please send the information by Thursday, 11 March. ************************************************************************ NEW BOOKS FOR THE UPCOMING WEEK This is a sampling of the new books available at the NCAR library.
