Participants will learn to use job-related performance expectations to support organizational goals and to measure performance; to coach employees toward improved productivity, and to plan and conduct the appraisal interview. Most web sites are poorly designed from the standpoint of the viewer. Examples of different sites will be used to explain and illustrate the principles of outstanding web site design. COMMUNICATING IN DIFFICULT SITUATIONS 21 January 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. ML-Damon Room Facilitator: Doug Surperka, Interpersonal Communication Programs, Inc. This class helps participants to assess and analyze difficult situations, apply specific principles for handling sensitive interpersonal dynamics, and create effective strategies for intervening appropriately. Skills gained in this class will give participants practical tools and strategies that can be put to immediate use. INTRODUCTION TO C++ PROGRAMMING CLASS Thursdays, January 23, 30; February 6, 13, 20 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. ML-Main Seminar Room Front Range Community College This course addresses the essential concept of 0-0 programming, showing how these are supported in "C++." C++ is an extension of C that support object-oriented (0-0) programming. The course also covers parts of C++ that are not directly related to 0-0 programming. (1/2 day lecture with homework lab assignments) Prerequisite: Coursework or experience in advanced C programming. The next Ashtanga yoga class session will begin on January 14th. It is held at the Foothills Lab fitness center. The teacher is offering a FREE class on Friday, January 17th for anyone who is interested in discovering what yoga is like. Classes are twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday. The session lasts eight weeks and costs $96 if signed up for in advance. You can sign up in advance for one day per week, too, with an advance payment of $48. All classes are from 11 a.m. to noon. Single class drop-ins, costing $7, are allowed, but should be arranged in advance with the teacher. Yoga mats, belts, and blocks are provided. The show features selections from the artist's extensive portfolios. Meyer has been an instructor of photography at the University of California, Santa Barbara; the California College of Arts and Crafts; and the University of Colorado at Boulder. FICTION, PAIN AND PLEASURE Dr. Barb Tschoepe (director, Department of Physical Therapy, Regis University; president, Pro Physical Therapy) and Steve Sadler (UCAR Health, Environment, and Safety Services) will host two seminars concerning myths and truths surrounding repetitive stress injuries (RSI) and office ergonomics. Employees who work at computer terminals two hours a day or more and their managers will benefit from attending one of these seminars. The seminars will be held at: --Mesa Lab: Thursday, January 16, Main Seminar Room, 9:00-11:00 a.m. --Foothills Lab: Tuesday, January 21, Main Auditorium, 2:30-4:30 p.m. Discussion topics include: --Is a $1,000 alternative keyboard really better than a $50 standard keyboard? --Who is most susceptible to RSI and why? --Are kneeling chairs better than other chairs? --How much should you pay for a chair? --If your wrist hurts, do you have carpal tunnel syndrome? --How much does it cost to solve an egronomic problem? --What is most dangerous: your mouse, keyboard, or phone? --What is the proper monitor height and keyboard angle? --How much does a repetitive stress injury cost the corporation? --And, most importantly, how can you get help to prevent repetitive stress injuries? The committee is made up of three NCAR staff members, each appointed by the NCAR director to serve two-year terms, and two professional artists from the local community to serve as advisers. Twice a year, the committee examines samples submitted by local artists and selects artists to display their work for one month each in the gallery and for two months in the cafeteria. The next judging will be held 11 February and will require a few lunch-time hours from committee members. If you would like to serve, please call Nita Razo, extension 8606, or e-mail her at razo@ucar.edu for an application. The deadline is 14 January.
