The 1990s

RAP scientist Rita Roberts tracks storms for a 1992 field campaign. The division has grown by leaps and bounds in the 1990s, advancing knowledge of aircraft icing and helping to create software to detect wind shear, turbulence, and other weather hazards. An increasing focus is on automated nowcasting of thunderstorms and other threats up to a half hour in advance.
