Just One Look
Hollywood came to Boulder on 23 July as parts of a made-for-television movie were filmed on the NCAR mesa. Dying to Be Perfect: The Ellen Hart Pena Story stars Crystal Bernard (above left), of the NBC series "Wings," and Esai Morales, of the films La Bamba and Bad Boys. The film documents the struggles of Pena, a championship runner in Boulder and the wife of U.S. transportation secretary Federico Pena, with bulimia and anorexia. Scenes were filmed primarily on the Walter Orr Roberts Trail and adjoining trails around the mesa. The movie's production staff made the most of their day at NCAR; they arrived between 3:00 and 6:00 a.m. and worked till 8:00 p.m. Dying to Be Perfect is expected to be telecast on ABC sometime next year.
