Just One Look
These workers aren't hanging from an elevator cab--they're on top of it. Several technicians spent eight weeks refurbishing the Mesa Lab's A-tower elevator. It reopened on 13 May, "right on schedule," according to maintenance supervisor John Pereira. The short elevator by the cafeteria is now getting a similar remodeling, to be followed by the B-tower's lift. Maintenance plans to conduct a before-and-after energy audit to check for savings from the new, more efficient drives in each elevator. Meanwhile, some of the A-tower staff found themselves more efficient after hiking up and down the stairs each day for weeks. "After a while," says Mary Lee from the fifth-floor NCAR director's office, "you could spot the employees in our group because they weren't gasping and wheezing like the visitors were."
