ANNOUNCEMENTS -----A Switch in Phone Switches: FL Service to Be Interrupted NCAR Telecommunications will be installing a new telephone switch at the Foothills Lab. It will replace the current one, which is ten years old. The new switch will be faster, have more capacity (lines) and enhance some of the current features. A hands-on demonstration will take place in the FL cafeteria Wednesday and Thursday, 19-20 October, during lunch hours, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Telecommunications staff will demonstrate the difference between the old system and the new system and answer questions. The new telephone switch will be installed starting Friday, 21 October, at 6:00 p.m. All telephone service at FL will be disconnected at that time and reconnected by Monday morning, 24 October. Service will be interrupted throughout the weekend. At UCAR North and UNAVCO, this change will affect all incoming calls as well as outgoing long-distance calls. Outgoing local calls from these sites will remain unaffected. On Saturday, 22 October, SCD will be taking this opportunity to move their networking equipment in the FL computer room. This should be a very brief outage (a half-hour at the most) but will briefly interrupt all network traffic to and from FL, UN, and UV; it may also affect traffic within FL. This outage is currently scheduled from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. If you have questions, contact Teresa Shibao, ext. 8510. -----New Technical Notes The following technical notes may be obtained from the UCAR Publications Office, ext. 8601; e-mail butterwo@ncar.ucar.edu or fax: 303- 497-8610.
