Questions about the New System --What happens with subscribers outside UCAR who now get Staff Notes in print? Earlier this month we asked external subscribers which of the new products they would like to receive. We will continue to mail Job Openings and Staff Notes Monthly in print to any interested people outside UCAR. --I already get the e-mail version of Staff Notes. What happens to that mailing list in October? This Week at UCAR will be sent automatically to all people with "ncar.ucar.edu" computer addresses beginning on 13 October. Instructions on how to unsubscribe will be included. The addressing is such that people who have chosen to block "all local users" mail from their system can still receive This Week at UCAR. Each file will be clearly identified (announcements, jobs, calendar, and the like) for ease of use. New staff will be added to the distribution list as they arrive. People outside UCAR who are on the present electronic list are being transferred to a new e-mail service, UCARline (see page 3). --How will This Week at UCAR be different in content from Staff Notes? This Week at UCAR will include virtually everything that now appears in Staff Notes except for lengthy features and photos, which will appear in Staff Notes Monthly. --Will the deadlines for submitting material change under the new system? Deadlines for submitting announcements, visitors, and Calendar items for This Week at UCAR will stay the same in the new system. Story ideas for Staff Notes Monthly should be submitted by the middle of the month preceding each issue. --Why do we need a weekly e-mail service when anybody can send their own message to "all local users"? While the "all local users" service is ideal for short-fuse items of interest to all or most staff, it is not the best medium for less timely or more specialized notices. In addition, each message must be opened and read individually. This Week at UCAR's announcements will be sent as a single file each week. The information also will be placed on Gopher and WWW/Mosaic for wider availability. --I don't have e-mail access. How do I know I'll get hard copies of This Week at UCAR? We are now in the process of locating and contacting all staff without e-mail. If we haven't yet contacted you, please pass along your name and site to Milli Butterworth, UN suite 330, ext. 8600, butterwo@ncar.ucar.edu. --
