This year's cities include Tampa, Florida; Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; Rapid City, South Dakota; and Oklahoma City. For each forecast period, participants predict the next day's temperature and precipitation on each of eight days. The class will meet thereafter in the ML Fitness Center on Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Each class session will cost $3.50; there is no charge for the introduction. Loose clothing and flat shoes are recommended. Leading the demo and the class will be Gerlinde Smith, a long- time expert in tai chi and chi kung (pronounced chee gong). Both of these ancient disciplines are gentle forms of exercise requiring no prior athletic experience and no special equipment. The ML class will teach the 24 postures in the Beijing-style, Chuan form of tai chi. This form cultivates a sense of balance, poise, limberness, and serenity with less knee strain than in some other forms of tai chi. Chi kung, used extensively in Chinese medicine, uses tai chi-like postures, extensive repetition, and breathing techniques to loosen the flow of bodily energies. Smith, a native of Austria, studied more than five years in Melbourne, Australia, and Beijing, People's Republic of China. She is a doctor of Oriental medicine (OMD) and has led exercises for audiences of thousands in Beijing. Smith has a private practice in Boulder and teaches students from the Naropa Institute. For more details on course content, call Smith at 530-5601. -----Have a Great Labor Day! Due to next Monday's holiday, Staff Notes will not be published on 8 September. -----Family and Work Survey Report Now Available The Council on Family and Work has completed a report on the results of an UCAR-wide staff survey on family and work issues that was undertaken in the spring of 1993. The report includes summaries of results on issues such as child care, elder care, sick leave, and flexible work options. A copy of the report is available for all staff who want one from Sharon Hsi in Human Resources (ext. 8714, e-mail hsi@ncar.ucar.edu). The main sections of the report are also included in the Council on Family and Work gopher files (see the following announcement). Council on Family and Work Goes On Line The Council on Family and Work (CFW) has taken several steps to provide information to staff electronically. First, the CFW has established a set of files in the gopher file system. These files provide information about elder care, child care (including the Boulder Business Dependent Care Association), and the Council on Family and Work. The files can be accessed through the "NCAR/UCAR News and Information" menu on the NCAR/UCAR gopher system main menu. If you do not have access to gopher, you may obtain hard copies of the gopher files by contacting Sharon Hsi in Human Resources. The CFW also has an e-mail alias (cfw@ncar.ucar.edu) which can be used to send questions or comments to the CFW. All questions and comments are welcome! Questions will be forwarded to the appropriate CFW member for reply. Issues will be discussed by the CFW as a whole. Finally, the CFW is in the process of establishing a Family and Work electronic mailing list for the purpose of disseminating information on family and work issues to interested staff. You can subscribe to the e-mail list now by sending a message to majordomo@ncar.ucar.edu. The subject line should be left blank and only the words "subscribe cfw" should appear on the first line of the message. For further information, contact Barb Brown (ext. 8468), Diane Rabson (ext. 8508), Ralph Milliff (ext. 1393), or any of the CFW members listed in the yellow pages of the staff directory. -----New Hires Debbie Aman, administrative secretary with the Walter Orr Roberts Institute.
