RACE AND PARTY TIME COMING UP! The annual up-the-hill races will occur on Friday, 16 September, followed immediately by the "new" fall party on the tree plaza at the Mesa Lab. The individual foot race begins at the base of the hill at 3:00 p.m. sharp, followed by the individual bike race at 3:30 p.m. and the divisional relay race at 4:00 p.m. Participants and spectators should plan for the mesa road to be closed for approximately five minutes prior to the beginning of each race, then opened briefly between races. Sign-up sheets for the races will be distributed to each division; you should sign up by Friday, 9 September, after which race officials will assign and distribute bib numbers. Details and instructions for the races will soon be distributed via an all-staff e- mail (check with others in your division if you do not have e-mail access). Divisions are responsible for organizing their teams and arranging them on the hill prior to the relay race. The winning relay team will be determined by a formula that uses finishing time and percentage participation. Public recognition will be given to the team with the most creative solution to the requirements of the race (stay tuned for more details). Some minor changes have been made to the traditional fall party, emphasizing the up-the-hill races and slightly scaling down the party which follows. Food and beverages will be available after the relay race until 6:00 p.m., but a main-course item will not be served. Also, musical entertainment will not be present (unless someone wishes to bring their stereo system!). Awards will be presented to the top three men and women finishers in the foot and bike races and to the winning division in the relay race.
